BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is a term widely used to describe employees buying and using their own devices for company work. BYOD has been happening in workplaces for some time now, yet many IT departments are still not completely ready for it. What if the employee loses their phone? What happens to all the documents created, edited and stored on their device? Is your IT department backing up employee endpoint devices? THE COMPANY & BYOD 19% of companies reported they adopted BYOD to keep employees happy. Another 17% cited productivity improvement as the top reason to implement BYOD.¹ While 15% cited BYOD’s ability to lower their organization’s overall mobile spending as the reason to adopt BYOD. ¹ MSP Mentor also stated that companies are more apt to adopt mobile phones (50%) than tablets (30%) as part of their BYOD policies. 74% of enterprises believe tablets will replace laptops. ¹ 52% placed a mobile usage policy in place that their employees must agree to and sign. ¹ THE EMPLOYEE & BYOD The Forrsights Workforce Employee Survey, Q4 2011 shows that workers are dissatisfied and are spending an average of $1253 annually of their own money on computers to do the job. ² 43% of workers surveyed say that they have used their own personal computer or smartphone to do their job in the past year, with mobile workers more likely to use their own computers than their deskbound counterparts. ³ IS YOUR BACKUP SYSTEM FOR MOBILE DEVICES EFFECTIVE? According to Gartner, by 2015 more than 60% of enterprises will have suffered material loss of sensitive corporate data via mobile devices. Companies face enormous risks due to the fact that corporate information now is edited and maintained on end user devices outside the data center. A data breach or loss can lead to disastrous circumstances from lost competitive advantage to reputational loss and the costs of litigation, compliance, and remediation. The fines associated with data loss are particularly high in industries such as healthcare, where a data breach can result in over $4 million in fines, according to a recent article by Health Data Management. 4 SO WHAT’S THE SOLUTION? The best way to ensure that all of your data on mobile devices stays with the company is to have a backup system that can be easily managed behind the scenes by your IT department. Otherwise, your employees may be putting corporate data at risk. Sources: 1 2 3 4 MSPmentor, “BYOD More Likely to Increase Expenses than Reduce Them,” By CJ , July 20, 2012.
