The Basics & Beyond : The Basics & Beyond An In depth study of our Salvation Slide 2: In the beginning… “Our Covenant with God” by: Rev Bill Cahill The need for the covenant: Man’s original state; the covenant relationship with man before the fall: Genesis 1:26-28 “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28) And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” (KJV) Man, God’s greatest creation, who was made a little lower than God himself… Psalm 8:5) “For thou hast made him a little lower than the *angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.” : Man, God’s greatest creation, who was made a little lower than God himself… Psalm 8:5) “For thou hast made him a little lower than the *angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.” *angels = Hebrew #430 Strongs concordance: 'elohiym (el-o-heem'); plural of 433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative: KJV-- angels, X exceeding, God (gods)- dess, -ly), X (very) great, judges, X mighty. BDB/Thayer’s # 430 ‘elohiym- The proper translation of angels here is elohiym… the supreme God, and also showing the plurality of the Godhead/Trinity. It was God’s plan to create mankind… : It was God’s plan to create mankind… Man was made by the choice of God to be made a little lower than himself. To be made in God’s classification of being… “A spirit being” for the sole purpose of fellowshipping with God on his level; God is not an animal, but he is a Spirit! John 4:24. “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” Slide 5: Gen.1:24 “And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind and it was so.” Note: cattle, creeping thing, beast and man were made on the 6th day of creation from the same dirt of the ground; and after their own kind! Man’s creation was an immediate act of God, and distinct from the lower forms of life… he was made in God’s image: an immediate act of God; not evolution! God invested his Spirit in the man. It was the will of God that all of creation should be subject to the man. (Genesis 1: 26, 28) Lesson #2 God formed man, not a monkey who would some day be a man! : God formed man, not a monkey who would some day be a man! Genesis 2:7 “And the Lord God formed man (not a monkey or an ape who would someday be a man!) of the dust of the ground, (the body). And *breathed into his nostrils the **breath of life; and man became a living soul.” *breathed = (Heb.) to inflate. **breath = (Heb.) the wind of God. Spirit in the N.T. (Gr.) is: pneuma = a current of air, i.e. breath, the Holy Spirit (The animator of all living things! b.c.) Genesis 2:7 “… man became a living soul (the spirit).” Eccl. 12:7 “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit (wind, breath, with resemblance to spirit) shall return unto God who gave it.” The covenant God had with Adam: (Gen. 1:26-28) : The covenant God had with Adam: (Gen. 1:26-28) He would be like God not only in his creation (a spirit being). But also in his wisdom (Gen. 2:19-20 he names the animals) and authority (which was only a little less than God himself Ps. 8:5) for it was God working through the man! God doesn’t indwell angels, animals or plants… only man! His authority was not to be limited to the earth alone, but over all of the creations of God! God’s future plans for all of mankind… : God’s future plans for all of mankind… (Ps. 8:3-9 “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; 4) What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 5) For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. 6) Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: 7) All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; 8) The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. 9) O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!”) Dominion = authority over! : Dominion = authority over! Seven things are listed here that man was and will someday have dominion over: With authority comes responsibility! What was Adam really like? Lesson #3 : What was Adam really like? Lesson #3 His wisdom: it has been estimated that the most brilliant genius uses but 10% of his total potential brain ability… this means that Adam was at least 1,000 times superior to today’s intellectuals. We are probably 95% blind to the total color scheme displayed by nature and 98% deaf to her many sound patterns; but Adam’s 5 senses were tuned to perfection! He perfectly understood his environment; he apparently was able to communicate with animals (he had dominion over them). What was Adam really like? : What was Adam really like? Adam must have had a tremendous vocabulary. Today there are over 3,500 different mammals, 8,600 different birds, 5,500 different reptiles and amphibians. There were probably more in Adam’s day, and he named them all. God gave man this planet as a birthday present to do with as he pleased. God had a covenant agreement with the man: (It belonged to the man…) In the garden of Eden… : In the garden of Eden… Gen. 2:8-9, 15-17 “And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9) And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” 15) “And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. 16) And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17) But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Man’s choice! To eat or not to eat!You are what you eat! : Man’s choice! To eat or not to eat!You are what you eat! Man had the choice of eating from all the trees in the garden including “The Tree of Life” He could not eat from “The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil” It was a curse to partake from it… The day that he ate from it was the day he would DIE! Rebellion caused him to DIE Spiritually That day! Even though he lived to be 930 yrs. old (Gen. 5:5), he died that day… God is not a man that he should lie! (Num.23:19) Unlimited Fellowship with GodLesson #4 : Unlimited Fellowship with GodLesson #4 Adam’s covenant with God (before the fall). You will enjoy unlimited fellowship with God: 1 John 1:3 “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.” 1 Cor. 1:9 “God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.” 2 Cor. 13:14 “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the *communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.” Fellowship with God : Fellowship with God *communion (lit. translation = fellowship, association, joint participation: The share which one has in anything.” That which the Holy Spirit has (or owns) he shares with us! (Also taken from the Gr. # 2844 Lit. a partner, associate, comrade or companion… “To be one’s partner” the same as fellowship in 1 Cor. 1:9 “God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.” And 1 John 1:3 “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.” Adam’s fellowship with God was a lot more than God walking with him in the cool of the day : Adam’s fellowship with God was a lot more than God walking with him in the cool of the day (Gen. 3:8 “And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.”). Please note: this was after the fall. Man was made in God’s image and sustained by the interwoven Spirit of God in man’s spirit (The proof: Romans 8:11 “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”) Quickened / Changed by the Holy Spirit…(“The Rapture”) : Quickened / Changed by the Holy Spirit…(“The Rapture”) We shall be changed, transformed, quickened (made alive) from the inside out!!! (“Think of the Rapture!”) this is how we will be (1 Cor. 15:52) changed in the * twinkling of an eye… ( est. to be 1/1,000 of a second). 1Thes 4:17) “Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” (back to 21) The New birth is more than a religious experience! It is a miracle!Lesson #5 : The New birth is more than a religious experience! It is a miracle!Lesson #5 Colossians 1:12-14 12. Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13. Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14. In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: We have looked at two words: quickened and translated these are very important words… : We have looked at two words: quickened and translated these are very important words… These are very important to our new birth… 1. They show: that this is more than a religious experience… Not a carnal religious philosophy, but, this is something supernatural and internal (in our spirit and mortal bodies) 2. Delivered from the spiritual kingdom of darkness, Satan’s kingdom (the spiritually dead) through his redeeming blood we have been translated (Gr. # 3179 Thayer's change of situation or place) and quickened (Gr. # 2227 make alive, give life) into the kingdom of his dear son (Jesus Christ). Quicken by the Holy Spirit (Ro. 8:11) : Quicken by the Holy Spirit (Ro. 8:11) Definition of quicken: Transformed Gr. # 2227 Thayer’s 2) to cause to live, to make alive, to give life a) by spiritual power to arouse and invigorate b) to restore to life c) to give increase of life: thus, of physical life d) used of the spirit, quickening as respects the spirit, endued with new and greater powers of life. Does this sound like some religious doctrine? Or some philosophy? Or something spiritual and miraculous? God’s Plan was that man would never die! The complete man Spirit, Soul & Body! : God’s Plan was that man would never die! The complete man Spirit, Soul & Body! 1 Cor 15:50,52-55 50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. (our bodies) (“The Rapture”) 53 For this corruptible (body) must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? Man is a 3d being! “Spirit, Soul and Body” Lesson #6 : Man is a 3d being! “Spirit, Soul and Body” Lesson #6 Man was created a triune being as a “whole person”. The dominant part was his spirit, made in God’s image and likeness (God is a spirit). Man possesses a soul which has been given to him for the exclusive purposes of: Thinking (and meditating). Reasoning Communicating with others. (also to understand / comprehend his environment) Communicating with God on a limited scale… only as much as he has of the revelation of God which comes from meditating on God’s Word and by allowing the Holy Spirit to illuminate our minds. The war between the Spirit and the Soul! The spiritual vs. the carnal (fleshly) nature… Pt. 1 : The war between the Spirit and the Soul! The spiritual vs. the carnal (fleshly) nature… Pt. 1 5. The soul is also a part of the spiritual make-up of man (Spirit and soul are together after the body is dead!) *** The soul is the conscious awareness of one’s self and surroundings… 6. The soul is not saved along with the spirit this is why there is a war raging within… *** The body is the slave to the soul! Gal 5:17 “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. There must be “heart surgery” in order for the man to live wholly unto God!” Heb 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Separation unto holiness! : Separation unto holiness! 7. The carnal soul must be separated from the spirit… only by the Word of God can it be dealt with after the newness of life… it must get saved! Start thinking like the recreated being that it is; in order that it does not backslide and eventually if allowed to continued will cause the man to die spiritually! James 1:21 “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your * souls.” *souls Gr. #5590 Thayer’s psuche- :  *souls Gr. #5590 Thayer’s psuche- def. # 2) the soul a) the seat of the feelings, desires, affections, aversions (our heart, soul, etc.) b) the (human) soul insofar as it is constituted that by the right use of the aids offered it by God it can attain its highest end and secure eternal blessedness, the soul regarded as a moral being designed for everlasting life c) the soul as an essence which differs from the body and is not dissolved by death (distinguished from other parts of the body) The soul needs to be saved… this is up to us to do through the Word of God! James 1:21 “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your * souls.” Our salvation is dependent upon our soul’s salvation… Adam allowed his soul to dominate him and this caused him to die spiritually. What is the soul? The salvation of the soul… The war between the Spirit and the Soul! The spiritual vs. the carnal (fleshly) nature… Pt. 2 Lesson #7 : The war between the Spirit and the Soul! The spiritual vs. the carnal (fleshly) nature… Pt. 2 Lesson #7 The soul needs to be saved… this is up to us to do through the Word of God! 1 Cor 5:5 “To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh (body), that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.” Ezek 18:20 “The soul that *sinneth, it shall *die.” Ezek 18:20“The soul that *sinneth, it shall *die.” def. of: * sinneth (BDB) Heb. # 2398 chata'- : Ezek 18:20“The soul that *sinneth, it shall *die.” def. of: * sinneth (BDB) Heb. # 2398 chata'- to sin, to miss, to miss the way, to go wrong, to incur guilt, to forfeit, to purify from uncleanness a) (Qal) 1) to miss 2) to sin, to miss the goal or path of right and duty 3) to incur guilt, to incur penalty by sin, to forfeit c) (Hiphil) 1) to miss the mark 2) to induce to sin, to cause to sin 3) to bring into guilt or condemnation or punishment d) (Hithpael) 1) to miss oneself, to lose oneself, to wander from the way Ezek 18:20“The soul that *sinneth, it shall *die.” def. of: * die (BDB) Heb. #4191 muwth- : Ezek 18:20“The soul that *sinneth, it shall *die.” def. of: * die (BDB) Heb. #4191 muwth- to die, to kill, to have one executed a) (Qal) 1) to die 2) to die (as a penalty), to be put to death 3) to die, to perish (used of a nation) 4) to die prematurely (by the neglect of wise moral conduct) b) (Polel) to kill, to put to death, to dispatch (one) c) (Hiphil) to kill, to put to death d) (Hophal); to be killed, to be put to death, to die prematurely Premature death… may come to those who continue in sin… (Most premature deaths are not due to sin, but some are! Sin will shorten our lives.) : Premature death… may come to those who continue in sin… (Most premature deaths are not due to sin, but some are! Sin will shorten our lives.) 1 Cor 5:1 “It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.” (had sex with stepmother) 1 Cor 5:5 “To deliver such an one unto Satan for the *destruction (* Gr. # 3639 = death) of the flesh, that the *spirit (* Gr. # 4145 pneuma =spirit) may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.” 2 Cor 2:6-8 “Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. 7) So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. 8) Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him. (Paul prays for this man that they would show mercy on him.) 1 Tim 1:20 “Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.” We cause cursing to come upon us when we remain in sin… God promises life or death, it’s your choice… : God promises life or death, it’s your choice… Deut 30:19-20 “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: 20) That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days…” 1 Pet 3:10 “For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:” Eph 6:2-3 “Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) 3) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth Salvation is more than “Lip Service” Lesson #8 : Salvation is more than “Lip Service” Lesson #8 Rev 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” Jesus is speaking to a backslidden lukewarm church “Laodicea” to let him in again… we see this also in Song of Sol. 5:2-4 “I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night. 3) I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them? 4) My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him. (When she finally decides to open the door he is gone.) Song of Sol. 5:6 “I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone…” She had to go out and search for him diligently! All I have to do is ask or let Jesus in? : All I have to do is ask or let Jesus in? It is not Jesus who is knocking on the hearts of the unbelievers to let him in; but rather it is the Holy Spirit who is stirring us: John 16:8-10 (Amp.) “And when He comes, He will convict and convince the world and bring demonstration to it about sin and about righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with God) and about judgment: 9) About sin, because they do not believe in Me [trust in, rely on, and adhere to Me]; 10) About righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with God);” How are we saved??? : How are we saved??? We believe unto righteousness and confess unto salvation… we are not saved by inviting Jesus in (he is not a guest, just here for a visit), but rather by believing what he did, by becoming my sacrifice for sin, by dying for me and paying the penalty for me. I trust in him that it is accomplished and I am saved… because he lives I will live also! How are we saved??? : How are we saved??? It is by accepting the revelation of the Holy Spirit that Jesus is my sin bearer and by his resurrection… and ascension when he carried his precious blood before the heavenly “Mercy Seat” to sprinkle HIS blood upon it for me! John 20:17 “Jesus saith unto her, touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” Heb 9:12 “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.” Salvation is more than “Lip Service” Part 2 Lesson #9 : Salvation is more than “Lip Service” Part 2 Lesson #9 It is with the soul (our choice) “our willingness” to believe unto salvation that we are saved… Ro. 10:10 with the *heart (soul, not spirit) * Gr. # 2588 Thayer’s kardia- The heart: b) 1) the soul or mind, as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes, endeavors 2) used of the understanding, the faculty and seat of the intelligence 3) used of the will and character Ro. 10:10 with the *heart (soul, not spirit)… : Ro. 10:10 with the *heart (soul, not spirit)… that we believe unto righteousness and with the mouth (body) *confession is made unto salvation (of the spirit)… This is “Our choice” we are free-will beings confession = Gr. 3670 Thayer’s homologeo- 1) to say the same thing as another, that is, to agree with, to assent … 3a) to declare openly, to speak out freely Strong’s #3670: from a compound of the base of 3674 and 3056; to assent, i.e. covenant, acknowledge: Isa. 53:10-12 (Amp.) : Isa. 53:10-12 (Amp.) 10) “Yet it was the will of the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief and made Him sick. When You and He (The Father - BC) make His life an offering for sin… 11) He shall see [the fruit] of the travail of His soul and be satisfied; by His knowledge of Himself [which He possesses and imparts to others] shall My [uncompromisingly] righteous One, My Servant, justify many and make many righteous (upright and in right standing with God), for He shall bear their iniquities and their guilt [with the consequences, says the Lord].” 12) “… He shall divide * the spoil with the mighty, because He poured out His life unto death…” Divide What Spoil??? : Divide What Spoil??? the spoil = Gr. # 7998 BDB shalal- prey, plunder, spoil, booty… (used of war)… Speaking of the devil: Isa.14:17 “That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?” Mark 3:27 “No man can enter into a strong man's house, and *spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.” * spoil Gr. # 1283 = plunder Col 2:15 “And having *spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” (*spoiled = disarmed) Rev 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Rev 1:18 “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” : Rev 1:18 “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Heb 2:14-15 14) “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15) And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.” The "Fear of death" is bondage!!! Jesus has the keys… so fear not… He came to set you free! Just TRUST in Him! YES IT IS JUST THAT SIMPLE! A CHILD LIKE FAITH! “If God be for us, who can be against us?” : “If God be for us, who can be against us?” Rom 8:28-31 28) “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29) For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30) Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 31) What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” Fear will keep us from becoming like Christ!
