22. very parent is concerned Eabout their child’s study and wants them to concentrate completely without any distractions. They often find it challenging to make their children sit at one place, focus on their homework, and complete it without too much distraction. It is a known fact that children are enthusiastic, curious, and energetic, and it is difficult for them to focus completely and concentrate on their studies without getting distracted at all. Understanding Children is very Important In order to solve the above mentioned issue, parents can employ various strategies to help understand children’s needs and requirements, and take necessary steps accordingly. We all should know that it is possible for a child to concentrate on a task for a longer period of time. Children are naturally curious and are very energetic. They have a creative and playful mind. Children face concentration issues because they have a different mindset as compared to adults. Their thought processes, opinions, outlook, and mindset are completely different than adults. Many children have short attention spans. Sometimes they find that the task assigned to them isn't interesting. As a result, they get bored and instantly shift their attention to something more VitalTechniques to Enhance Concentration among Children 26 Education. Innovation. 23. interesting. Adults complete their tasks responsibly; but children want their assigned task to be interesting and engaging. Otherwise, they lose interest in completing the required assignment. Techniques to Improve a Child’s Attention Psychologists state that there are many techniques that can be employed to improve a child’s attention span, focus, and concentration. Employing these strategies, parents can properly deal with their children’s concentration problems. Some techniques that can be used to enhance a child’s attention can include the following: Focus Games and Attention-Building Exercises Children learn more by playing, and games can be used for building concentration. Adding fun activities into the daily curriculum will help them to concentrate more in studies. Also, providing children the scope to learn by using regular toys and activities that improve attention and concentration can be an innovative step. Studies suggest that gadgets like mobile phones, tablets, and so on reduce attention span and memory of children. Teachers and parents can replace these gadgets and implement innovative techniques like thinking games, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, card games, and picture puzzles to boost their creativity and reasoning. Moreover, parents can employ sequencing activities like arranging things in alphabetical order, following recipes, and so on for the children who find it difficult concentrating. Creating an Environment devoid of Distractions A soothing and calming environment helps some children to concentrate, while for others, it takes just the opposite - an environment full of hustle and bustle. Understanding the kind of environment a child prefers for studying, can help a lot in increasing their concentration. Parents can use soft instrumental music and soft lighting to create an ambience and set the mood of study. Gadgets like mobiles, tablets, and laptops should be kept out of the children’s reach to avoid distractions. If one needs computers for studying, parents should make sure that it is used only for studies and not for the purpose of entertainment. All study-related materials like books, notebooks, pencils, and so on should be available to the children so that they don’t need to get up to get anything. This also helps children to keep an account of how much work is left and assists them in proper management of time, which, in turn, helps them to increase focus and attention. A Nutritious Diet of Green and Healthy Food A healthy diet is very important for good concentration. Eating healthy food can help children in concentrating well on their studies. There are various food products which enhance concentration like almonds, eggs, and lean meat. Experts say that children’s diet should include green leafy vegetables and fruits which provide a proper dose of antioxidants that, in turn, boost brain power. Proper Routine If students are provided with a proper routine to follow, they get used to a study schedule. It not only creates a positive impact on their studies, but also regulates their day-to-day activities. Moreover, a proper routine helps in time management and also helps the students to prepare themselves mentally when it’s the time to study. This eventually helps children to concentrate on studies. Naps and Study Breaks If a child is given adequate time for naps and breaks, it refreshes their mind and boosts concentration. A good night’s rest helps children to focus well on studies. Parents can also let their children take a power nap of twenty minutes after school. This would assist in enhancing their concentration in studies. Parents should make sure that all bathroom breaks, short snacks, and other things have been taken care of before children begin their studies, as these may interfere with concentration. A Motivating Reward System Parents can motivate their students to study by providing small rewards which doesn’t necessarily have to be chocolates or toys. Parents can praise their children for performing well and for studying further. Concentration is a very important factor when it comes to education of children. For better results, concentration needs to be improved and made automatic. In order to do that, both parents and students have to make dedicated and consistent efforts. The mentioned techniques can work wonders and play an essential part in boosting concentration among students. CLEAR FOCUS T R 27Education. Innovation. 24. ducation is what remains after one has Eforgotten what one learned in the school.” Albert Einstein. The word ‘Education comes from Latin word ‘Educere’ which means, ‘to lead out’. But over the years it is tragic to see that hardly people go through the grind of education in the institutes to bring out the best in them. Most of the approach today is to just get a degree that will be an entry door to get a job in the market. To describe today’s education system, it is apt to say, ‘Man is made for the paper not the paper for man’ If I have my credentials written on a paper (a degree, diploma etc) then people trust the paper more than the person! “Education is the manifestation of the perfection already present in a human” Swami Vivekanand. Naturally everyone is born for greatness, formal education should be at the service of humanity to bring out the best in the person as Swami Vivekanandji observed. All the tools, infrastructure and environment of an educational institute should be channelized towards this purpose and then we will have better society, nation, and world. Not that Education is a panacea for all ills of the society. But as Victor Hugo observed, “He who opens a schools closes a prison”, indeed the right kind of education will help alleviate many of the ills that are troubling our society today. Indeed we will read less news like a PhD holder turned as fanatic religious zealot and goes on a killing spree. It is here that the importance of ‘Self Education’ comes over Formal Education. “Formal Education will make you a living, Self Education will make you a fortune”, observed Jim Rohn. One cannot argue with the brilliant statement. If all the means utilized by the Education system fail to make us more humane indeed the purpose of Education fails. So how do we Self Educate ourselves? No can undermine the importance of books here. Good books, literature enlighten the soul. If we are really serious, we will come out to be very different person after we have been through the book then when we started. T.S Eliot said, “We shall not cease from exploration and the end of our exploration is to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.” Also one has to be good observer of life, people around. When we shut our mouth and listen we learn, when we speak many times we rather show our IMPORTANCEIMPORTANCEIMPORTANCE SelfEDUCATION OVER FORMAL EDUCATION “ OF ASTUTE THOUGHTS 28 Education. He is the Secretary to the Trustee of the Sanjay Ghodawat Institutes, and also has his own training program, 'The Edge' that he conducts at many corporate and institutes for personnel developing their emotional intelligence and leadership abilities. About The Author ignorance! Observation of the changing trends, how people react to situations, how leaderships fail or work all are vital to educate us and one should be a good observer. We also learn from our experiences. When we succeed we celebrate but do not learn. Many times it puffs us. But if we take failures in the right spirit, we can learn, adapt, change and get better. That’s what the Deming’s PDCA cycle is all about. The practice of Zen in the Japanese industries made them the foremost challengers in the industrial world. How did they do it? Well they were all self learners over formal learners. Conclusion: I do not intend to demean Formal education and getting degree. But my attempt in this article to create shift in paradigm about how we approach education. If we approach formal education in the right spirit, it will surely transform us. But in the din of today’s commercialization, globalization information is mistaken to be education. My humble attempt is to help us all be aware of the real purpose of education and let it transform us to be better human beings. Let me end with this quote, “Change is the end result of all true learning.” T R Sohan D. Tiwade Lecturer 29Education. Innovation. Success NOWLEDGEREVIEW T H E NOWLEDGEREVIEW NOVEMBER 2018
