Wyeth Amplistar Piedmont Triad Research Park Biotech in NC  :  Biotech in NC  The primary use of Biotechnology in North Carolina is in: Production of pharmaceuticals Research Diagnostics The need: 140 companies state-wide, 30 in the Triad 17,000 Employees Industry growth 10-15% annually By 2022, about 125,000 North Carolinians will work in Biotechnology Presently, only 3 community colleges are approved to offer the A.A.S. degree in Biotechnology What is Biotechnology?  :  What is Biotechnology?  Transferring the products and unique features of living organisms into practical uses to improve the quality of life for both humans and animals. Some examples are: Diagnosis and treatment of diseases Enzymes for cleaning contact lenses Cleaning up of toxic waste sites and oil spills Wine, beer and yogurt production Human identification for forensic purposes A.A.S. Degree in Biotechnology:  A.A.S. Degree in Biotechnology Biotechnology Curriculum Goal:  Biotechnology Curriculum Goal The current primary focus of biotechnology in North Carolina is on the research and production of new pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. Forsyth Tech’s goal is to prepare graduates who are highly skilled laboratory technicians that will work in the biological and pharmaceutical fields whether in a research-based laboratory or industry. Employment Opportunities:  Employment Opportunities There are currently over 30 biotechnology companies located in the Piedmont Triad. There is a high current need for skilled laboratory and bioprocessing technicians with an anticipated increasing demand of 10 – 15% annually. Graduates of the biotechnology program will find employment in many of the exciting fields of biotechnology including, but not limited to, laboratory-based research, diagnostic investigation, biomedical production, and quality control. Anticipated starting salaries are $30,000 - 40,000. Department of Labor Biotechnology Grant $5,000,000 National Center for Biotech Workforce:  National Center for Biotech Workforce Forsyth Technical Community College Southeast – Biotech research and development New Hampshire Technical College Northeast – Biomanufacturing Indian Hills Community College (Iowa) Midwest – Agriculture and food processing Bellevue Community College (Washington State) Northwest – Bioinformatics training Miracosta Community College (San Diego) Southwest – Highlighting Bioprocessing Nanotechnology:  Nanotechnology Nanotechnology deals with devices on a molecular scale.  One inch = 25,400,000 nm This is a rapidly emerging field whose influence will be as wide and as great as that of the computer revolution.
