Space Centres Telespazio (Finmeccanica/Thales) ranks among the world’s leading satellite services operators. The company relies on a domestic and international network of space centres and teleports, the most important being the Fucino in the Abruzzo region. The Fucino Space Centre was established in the early sixties for managing the first satellite telecommunications experiments between Europe and the United States. In Italy, Telespazio also operates through its Lario, Matera, and Scanzano Space Centres, located respectively in the regions of Lombardy, Basilicata, and Sicily. The company runs its own teleports in Brazil, Argentina, and Romania. Telespazio’s staff operates also out of clients’ facilities and teleports worldwide, providing operational support for space operations, maintenance and site management. Most importantly, Telespazio is present within the Italian Defense Centres of Pratica di Mare and Vigna di Valle. In Malargue, Argentina it manages ESA’s Deep Space 3 station. In France, it runs the Creil and Maysons-Lafitte stations and in Malindi, Kenya the Italian Space Agency’s Broglio Space Centre. The company is also present at the Kourou Space Centre in French Guyana. FUCINO SPACE CENTRE The “Pietro Fanti” Space Centre at Fucino near L’Aquila, operational since 1963, is the world’s most important teleport for civil use. The Centre’s activities focus on satellite in-orbit control, telecommunications services, television, and multimedia services. In-orbit control activities, performed by a team of over 80 engineers and specialized technicians, include TT&C (Telemetry, Tracking and Command) and, in general, all activities related to the performance of a space mission. The Fucino Space Centre covers all mission aspects, from launcher/satellite Area: 370.000 square meters separation up to final orbit achievement (LEOP: Launch and Early Orbit Phase). Facilities: 23.000 square meters Over 100 operational antennas It also manages the entire operational life of the satellite, up to the de-orbiting 14 control rooms (of which 6 operational always) Staff: 256 constellation for Earth observation, as well as one of the two Mission Control phase. Fucino hosts the Control Center of the COSMO-SkyMed Italian Centres of the Galileo European satellite navigation system.

MATERA SPACE CENTRE In 1994, Telespazio established the Matera Space Centre. Today the Centre is managed by eGEOS, Telespazio/Italian Space Agency company. In 2009, Telespazio assigned Matera with responsibility for Earth observation activities. From 1983 to 2009, Telespazio also managed the adjacent Italian Space Agency’s Space Geodesy Centre. e-GEOS, through the Matera Centre, provides services for the acquisition, processing, and storage of data downlinked from Earth observation satellites. The company is responsible for the production and distribution of images and products and for development of applications Area: 55.000 square meters Facilities: 2.500 square meters 8 operational antennas Staff: 108 and services for environmental monitoring. The Centre staff played an active role in the design, integration, and testing of the ground receiving and data processing station for the civil segment of the Italian COSMO-SkyMed satellite constellation. From the launch of the constellation’s first satellite in 2007, the Centre has provided operational support and maintenance. Since 2012, the Matera Space Centre has become one of the four stations of the Core Ground Segment of Copernicus (former GMES), the European program for Earth observation. The Centre will receive radar and optical data acquired by the Sentinel satellites. LARIO SPACE CENTRE The Lario Space Centre, near Lake Como in Northern Italy, has been operational since 1976. Activities began with the Ku-band propagation experiments through the Italian Sirio 1 satellite and with analog telephone and television links with the United States and countries of the Middle and Far East via Intelsat satellites. Today, the Lario Network Operation Centre manages telecommunications networks for corporate and institutional users. Lario manages also interactive satellite broadband communication systems for emergency services for Civil Defence, Fire Brigades and Police Area: 80.000 square meters Facilities: 5.000 square meters 35 operational antennas Staff: 62 departments. Through Lario, Telespazio runs other activities such as Customer Care / Help Desk, mobile information services (telephony, fax, and data for vehicles and vessels) with European coverage, as well as navigation and messaging services with global coverage. Through the National Television Control Centre, Lario manages television services (access to the space segment and up-link management for both fixed and mobile systems) for major Italian and international broadcasters. SCANZANO SPACE CENTRE The Scanzano Space Centre near Palermo, Sicily began operations in 1989. The facility hosts a Ka-band gateway for bidirectional internet services for the Skylogic client. It also hosts a reference station, part of the EGNOS satellite navigation project, for the European Satellite Services Provider (ESSP). Scanzano sits in the middle of the Mediterranean, in a key geographical position for communications with Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The Scanzano Centre provides satellite link services in the telecommunications, satellite navigation and infomobility sectors. Its Total Area: 120, 000 square meters Protected Area: 55,000 square meters Covered Area: 5,000 square meters 7 Operational antennas Staff: 26 staff also provides engineering services for the development, installation and maintenance of satellite links for domestic as well as international customers.
