 Speaking is "the process of building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and non-verbal symbols, in a variety of contexts" (Chaney, 1998, p. 13). meaning contexts contexts

meaning Feelings  Opinions  Personal details  Functions: 1- Giving advice 2- Expressing hope 3- Telling stories  Daily routines  Describing: 1- People 2- Places 3- Objects 4- Habits contexts  • • • • • • Formal Informal At home At school On holiday At a mall

Many language learners regard speaking ability as the measure of knowing a language. Many learners are interested in speaking rather than other language skills.

I hate role plays. I love talking about real things. I do not want to pretend. The teacher’s is always asking us to talk about difficult things, like about global warming. It’s so difficult, I can’t even talk about this in my own language. I never speak in class. I’m too nervous and everyone is better than me so I just stay quiet. How can I speak when I don’t know all the words? I am afraid of making mistakes

Therefore, good environment helps the students to speak actively and correctly. So, try to ease your students and remove their nervousness, fear and anxiety with encouraging words.

    Students talk a lot( STT) All get a chance to speak Motivation is high Students speak the target language Undertaking all these via:  Pair work  Group work  Whole class activity

Discussions Interviews Watch and speak Picture comments and discussion Role plays SPEAKING Describing pictures Problem solving Spot the differences

   PRE SPEAKING ◦ Plan and organize for speaking ◦ Choosing a speaking topic ◦ Determining a purpose and audience WHILE SPEAKING ◦ Engaging students in interactions with peers and other audiences. ◦ Engage in formal and informal speaking situations POST SPEAKING ◦ Reflection about students performance (critical thinking) ◦ Reflect upon performance ◦ Giving feedback

    students actually have a strong desire to speak. They are reluctant to speak because they are afraid of making mistakes and failing to find suitable words to express themselves well. Teachers should play a great role in trying to encourage students to speak by using as many ways as possible and creating a good language speaking environment, students will speak actively, willingly and naturally. Speaking as one of the four skills, can be mastered only through practice. Practice makes PERFECT.
