The ghost waka.
Te Awatea was a war waka, owned by the people of Waimea. (Ngati Kuia and Ngati Apa lived in the area at ths time.)
The Ngati Koata tribe came down from the North Island and stole Te Awatea after many battles with the local iwi.
The people of Waimea stood on the beach and sung a song of grief. Their taonga (treasure) had been taken from them.
The Ngati Koata tribe took Te Awatea and headed toward Separation Point.
To this day, the Maori elders can hear the paddles dig into the water in Tasman Bay.
Today they still say, if you listen carefully you may hear the paddles of the legendary ghost waka hit the waters of Tasman Bay.
