For many photographers, the spectacular array of colors present in sunrises and sunsets make them the perfect subjects for photographs. While taking quality sunrise and sunset photographs can prove to be challenging, the endeavor is not always as difficult as it may seem. An important part of getting great sunset photos is thinking ahead. Although many sunset pictures are taken spontaneously, choosing a location, planning the timing, and considering the weather can make for better results.
Once the sunset has started, underexposing the image will allow for photographs that have richer colors, creating a dramatic feel. Underexposing the image can be done by either choosing a fast shutter speed or setting the camera on manual mode. Keeping the camera on manual focus allows for more defined lines in the shot, while taking off white balance allows for the golden tones of more colorless sunsets to show.
Furthermore, finding some sort of object, typically a silhouette, in the foreground provides added depth and mood. Sunset photographs are also improved when the horizon is not in the middle of the frame. Consider placing the horizon in the bottom third for more striking sunsets, and in the top third for sunsets that seem to lack desirable qualities; this helps create a more interesting composition. Consider the surrounding scenery as well. Not only do sunsets affect the sky, they also cast a unique glow on buildings, trees, and other objects.
