atMusallah at-Taqwa Saturday August 8, 2010 Islamic College of Canberra Explanation of the Three Fundamental Principles Class Notes – Term 5, Week 1 : : . . ... : . The evidence for the Prayer (as-salaat) and the zakaat, and the explanation of tawheed is the saying of Allah (swt): And they were not commanded except that they should worship Allah alone, making their worship and obedience purely for Him, upon the true Religion and free from shirk; and that they should establish the Prayer, and pay the zakaat and that is the straight and true Religion [al-Bayyinah; 98:5]. The evidence for fasting (siyaam) is the saying of Allah (swt): O you who believe, fasting is prescribed as an obligation for you as it was prescribed as an obligation for those who came before you, so that you may attain taqwa (obedience to Allah and avoidance of whatever He has forbidden [Al-Baqarah; 2:183]. The evidence for hajj is the saying of Allah (swt): And hajj to Allah’s sacred House is an obligation upon those able to perform it; and whoever refuses and rejects the obligation of hajj to Allah’s house, then Allah has no need of him or any of the creation [Aal-Imran; 3:97]. Establishment of Salaat and the Payment of Zakaat • The Sheikh (ra) uses evidence from Surat al-Bayyinah to prove that the salaat and the zakaat are integral pillars of Islam, without which a person’s Islam would be incorrect except with them. • Also within this verse is the explanation of tawheed which is the basis upon which a person’s Islam is accepted or rejected. Allah (swt) says: ∩∈∪ ÏπyϑÍhŠs)ø9$# ßƒÏŠ y7Ï9≡sŒuρ 4 nο4θx.¨“9$# (#θè?÷σãƒuρ nο4θn=¢Á9$# (#θßϑ‹É)ãƒuρ u™!$x uΖãm tÏe$!$# ã&s! tÅÁÎ=øƒèΧ ©!$# (#ρ߉ç6÷èu‹Ï9 žωÎ) (#ÿρâÉ∆é& !$tΒuρ And they were not commanded except that they should worship Allah alone, making their worship and obedience purely for Him, upon the true Religion and free from shirk; and that they should establish the Prayer, and pay the zakaat and that is the straight and true Religion [al-Bayyinah; 98:5] • This verse is general and covers all type of worship. Thus a person must perform all acts of worship purely and sincerely for Allah’s sake, being upon the straight and true religion and following the revealed way prescribed by Him.

• Those who disbelieve (which is whom this verse is addressing) were not ordered except to isolate Allah (swt) alone in worship (i.e. tawheed) and to abandon all other religions, leaning only towards Islam (i.e. hunafaa). • Ibn Abbas (ra) said regarding this verse: In the Tawraat and Injeel, they were not ordered except with purity of intention in worship and upon tawheed. • This verse demonstrates an example of something particular being mentioned after something general. So establishment of the salaat and payment of the zakaat are types of worship, however Allah (swt) mentioned them specifically due to their great importance. Therefore the salaat is a bodily worship and the zakaat is a worship involving giving wealth and they are mentioned jointly in the book of Allah (swt). • The true and straight religion referenced in this verse is Islam since it contains no crookedness as it is the • Just as this verse contains mention of worship (both general and specific), it also comprises the reality of religion laid down by Allah (swt), and far removed is Allah (swt) from legislating any form of crookedness. tawheed and that is to make worship purely for Allah (swt) without any inclination towards shirk. Thus, whoever does not make their worship purely for Allah (swt) is not a muwahhid. • There are other verses in the Quran where Allah (swt) specifically orders the establishment of the salaat. Allah (swt) says: $Y?θè%öθ¨Β $Y7≈tFÏ. šÏΖÏΒ÷σßϑø9$# ’n?tã ôMtΡ%x. nο4θn=¢Á9$# ¨βÎ) Verily, the prayer is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours. [An-Nisaa; 4:103] • The prayer has a fixed time just as the case with hajj, therefore guard and preserve these times if you are true believers. • Allah (swt) has in many verses combined the mention of salaat and zakaat. To be exact, in eighty two verses, Surat al-Bayyinah being one of them. • As-Salaat is a connection (sila) between the slave and his Lord and the comfort of the eyes (quratu-3ayn) of the believers, just as it was the comfort of the eye of the Messenger (saw). • The importance of salaat is not lost on any intelligent believer. The fact that it is classified as the second pillar of Islam which Allah (swt) has obligated upon every man and woman should highlight its extreme importance. • In further demonstrating its importance, it may well be sufficient to ponder the famous hadith of Jabir Ibn Abdullah reported in Sahih Muslim: Between a person and disbelief is the abandonment of salaat [Muslim] • There is a difference of opinion amongst the scholars (which we will not discuss here) as to the one who abandons salaat out of laziness and carelessness as to whether they are kaafir or faasiq. There is however no difference of opinion upon the one who abandons the salaat because they disregard it as an obligation. The scholars unanimously agree that such a person is kaafir. • Having said that, do you really want to be amidst the difference of opinion between the scholars, where some say you are kaafir and others say you are faasiq? None are praiseworthy characteristics! • The study of salaat needs dedicated lessons if we are to discuss its pillars, its obligatory parts, its recommended parts, its preconditions and that which negates it. These are fiqh oriented discussions and are outside the scope of this class.

• As for the zakaat, it is the third rukn of Islam. Allah (swt) says in regards to its obligation: $pκÍ5 ΝÍκŽÏj.t“è?uρ öΝèδãÎdγsÜè? Zπs%y‰|¹ öΝÏλÎ;≡uθøΒr& ôÏΒ õ‹è{ Take sadaqa (alms) from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with it [At-Tawba; 9:103] • Allah (swt) orders the Prophet (saw) to rightfully take from the wealth of the rich and give it to those in need. The nature of the human being is as Allah (swt) has mentioned: ∩⊄⊇∪ $¸ãθãΖtΒ çŽösƒø:$# 絡¡tΒ #sŒÎ)uρ ∩⊄⊃∪ $Yãρâ“y_ •Ž¤³9$# 絡¡tΒ #sŒÎ) ∩⊇®∪ %æθè=yδ t,Î=äz z≈|¡ΣM}$# ¨βÎ) Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient. Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him. And niggardly when good touches him [Al-Ma’arij; 70:19-21] • Thus the zakaat is not only a purification for the souls of the poor and needy who may harbor feelings of hatred and resentment towards the rich, but first and foremost it is a purification of the souls of the rich from greediness, stinginess, niggardliness and from the worship of wealth. • The one who abandons zakaat out of stinginess and greediness is sinful and has disobeyed Allah (swt) and His Messenger (saw) and it is upon Waliul Amr to take it from them forcefully just as Abubakr Al-Siddeeq (ra) did during the battles of Ar-Ridda when the Arab tribes refused to give their zakaat. He uttered his famous words: : . ¯ . By Allah, I will wage war upon those who differentiate between the salaat and the zakaat. By Allah, if they withheld a 3iqaal (camel rope) which they owed to the Prophet (saw) he would have fought them with the swords. • As for its amount, it is 2.5% of your wealth if it has reached the nisaab (minimum threshold) which is agreed upon as being approximately equal to the value of 86 grams of gold and it has passed the hawl (one hijri calendar year). There is also zakaat obligatory upon livestock and agricultural yields which we will not discuss in this class. Observing As-Siyaam • This is the fourth rukn of Islam. The proof of its obligation is the saying of Allah (swt): ∩⊇∇⊂∪ tβθà)−Gs? öΝä3ª=yès9 öΝà6Î=ö7s% ÏΒ šÏ%©!$# ’n?tã |=ÏGä. $yϑx. ãΠ$u‹Å_Á9$# ãΝà6ø‹n=tæ |=ÏGä. (#θãΖtΒ#u™ tÏ%©!$# $y㕃r'≈tƒ O you who believe, fasting is prescribed as an obligation for you as it was prescribed as an obligation for those who came before you, so that you may attain taqwa [Al-Baqarah; 2:183] • As Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen (ra) mentions in the explanation, the meaning of ‘as it was prescribed as an obligation for those who came before you’ contains a number of fawaaid (beneficial lessons):

i) The importance of fasting, since Allah (swt) made it obligatory upon the nations before us. This shows that this is something which Allah (swt) loves. ii) Ease for this ummah (nation) since it is not alone in having this duty to fast placed upon it, a duty which may be difficult for the souls and the bodies. iii) An indication that Allah (swt) perfected the religion with the virtues which were given to previous nations. • Also in this verse, Allah (swt) makes clear the wisdom for fasting, and that is that you should fear Allah (swt) through fasting and obtain taqwa through it. You may recall our previous discussions on the definition of taqwa. • This benefit was indicated by the Prophet (saw) in his saying: Whoever does not abandon falsehood and evil actions, then Allah has no need that he should abandon his food and drink. [Bukhari] • As for the reward of fasting, the Prophet (saw has said: Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. [Bukhari, Muslim] Performance of Hajj • This is the fifth and final rukn of Islam. The proof for its obligation is the saying of Allah (swt): ∩®∠∪ tÏϑn=≈yèø9$# Çtã ;©Í_xî ©!$# ¨βÎ*sù tx x. tΒuρ 4 Wξ‹Î6y™ ϵø‹s9Î) tí$sÜtGó™$# ÇtΒ ÏMøt7ø9$# kÏm Ĩ$¨Ζ9$# ’n?tã ¬!uρ And hajj to Allah’s sacred House is an obligation upon those able to perform it; and whoever refuses and rejects the obligation of hajj to Allah’s house, then Allah has no need of him or any of the creation [Aal-Imran; 3:97]. • This verse was revealed in the ninth year after the hirah when the hajj became an obligation. It is conditional to those able to perform it (i.e. they meet the preconditions for hajj), therefore it is not an obligation on those who do not meet the criteria. • Having said that, one should strive to perform hajj as soon as it becomes possible for them to do so. The Prophet (saw) said: ( ) Hasten to perform hajj (i.e. when it becomes obligatory) for none of you knows what you will be exposed to that may prevent you from doing so. [Ahmad] • Allah’s (swt) saying ‘ ... and whoever refuses and rejects the obligation of hajj to Allah’s house, then Allah has no need of him or any of the creation’ is proof that whoever abandons the performance of hajj then they are guilty of kufr (infidelity).

• This kufr does not take a person out of the fold of Islam according to the majority of scholars due to the saying of Abdullah Ibn Shaqeeq: The companions of the Messenger (saw) did not used to regard the abandonment of any action to be infidelity, except for the abandonment of Prayer [Tirmidhi] Review questions 1. Apart from proving the obligation of salaat and zakaat what else does verse five of Surat Al-Bayyinah give an explanation of? Provide an example to support your answer. 2. What are the two points mentioned and discussed which highlight the extreme importance of salaat? 3. The meaning of the word zakaat is derived from the word to purify, as per the verse in Surat At-Tawba. When zakaat is paid, who is being purified and from what are they being purified of? 4. What is the main point of benefit that can be extracted from the first hadith of Bukhari in relation to siyaam? 5. What is a person guilty of if they abandon the obligation of hajj when they have the capacity to do so? Explain your answer and support it with evidence.
