Sulivan’s Island Sulivan’s Island is a 3 mile long barrier island on the Atlantic north of Charleston and at the mouth of Charleston Harbor. It was home to Fort Moultrie, built in 1776 to guard the port during the Revolutionary War. There is a visitor center on Middle Street that re-tells the story. At the fort site there are cannon and an observation deck offering a view of Fort Sumter, from which the opening salvo of the Civil War was fired. The beach there is open for walking and enjoying the passing ships entering and departing Charleston Harbor. The northern end of the island offers a parking lot adjacent to Breach Inlet, through which passed the Civil War submarine H.L. Hunley on its way to sink the USS Housatonic. Walk along the beach there and enjoy fishing, sun, salt and sand. You can also see, but not visit, the 1961 lighthouse. Middle Street on Sullivan’s Island is the home to many restaurants, many of which offer outdoor dining. As you drive along you will see many historic homes, some of which are renovated military buildings. Sullivan’s Island is the favorite beach of many of Charleston’s oldest and most wellto-do families. Many of the homes are beachfront or beachside or on the waterways. It is an area of high demand and the real estate values reflect that. We look forward to showing you the homes and the ambiance of Sullivan’s Island.
