Successful cassava pest & disease management: A stepwise process Kris Wyckhuys Asia Cassava Entomologist

IFAD project • • • Program duration: 3 years Program start date: August 2012 Beneficiary countries: Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Lao PDR, China, Cambodia • • Program Components: a. To monitor and map the incidence and spread of cassava pests and diseases. – Assessment of the impacts of pests and diseases, the effectiveness of the cultural and biocontrol measures being used for cassava mealybug in Thailand, and of those introduced or developed for other pests and diseases for other countries; • b. To manage the economic pests and diseases of cassava in the region. – Cultural and biological management tools; • • c. To train and build capacity of researchers, extension workers and farmers in the identification and management of cassava pests and diseases. d. To share information on pests and diseases of cassava with the broader research and development community in the region and in other cassava production regions.

• Monitoring – Regional – Province or district-level – Farm-level • Prevention – Quarantine barriers – Clean seeds – Clean fields (sanitation) • Control – Biological control – IPM options • Chemical control • Cultural control Comprehensive (farmer) extension & awareness raising campaign Recipe for effective pest/disease control

Informed decision-making

Sequential process Farmer knowledge, information channels Monitoring Applied research prevention Applied research control Optimal targeting, content development & delivery of farmer extension

Monitoring & alert network • Where? • Regional scouting – Mealybug species complex – P. manihoti: parasitoid abundance & impact • Simple survey protocol – Standardized across countries/regions • Quick screening – Adopted in Lao PDR, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand • Anticipated outcome – Visualization of pest/disease ‘hot spots’ – Early detection x incursion new areas – Sustained monitoring • Safe areas for sourcing planting materials

Key research themes • Witches broom 1. Insect vector identification & population fluctuations 2. Stake treatments • Mealybug 1. Food web analysis ~ P. manihoti / A. lopezi 2. Lethal/sub-lethal effects of seed treatments 3. Economics of biological control

IPM extension campaign • Exploratory farmer survey – – – – (Perceived) biotic constraints Agro-ecological knowledg Current management Phytosanitary information channels • Anticipated outcome – Guidance for extension campaign • Prevention & control – Farmer-to-farmer educational video • Field sanitation, biological control & stake treatments • English, French, 4 local languages • Distributed e.g., through starch processors

Partner institutions • Monitoring – PPD (Vietnam), PPC, NAFRI (Laos), GDA (Cambodia), DoA (Thailand) • Research – PPRI, IAS (Vietnam), Kasetsart University & DoA (Thailand) • Rayong Field Crops Research Center • Extension – Farmer survey work: DoAE (Thailand), RUA (Cambodia), NUoL & PPC (Laos) – Extension: PPD (Vietnam), PPC (Laos), GDA (Cambodia), DoAE(Thailand)
