Who makes/publishes the website?: The website was created by Geoff Smith. Smith graduated from The University of British Columbia in Canada with a degree in Computer Science. The site is currently published by EBAY who purchased it back in May of 2007. What the application is or does: This website compiles a list of the member’s interests and then directs the member to random web-pages all over the internet that are based upon the set list. This list can be changed at any time and is can be very simple or extensive, very narrow or as random as the member chooses. Once the user is at the site they have the ability to rate it with a thumbs up or a thumbs down which will either make it more or less likely for that page to come up for another user who is interested in similar things. Also, stumbleupon.com works as a social networking site; allowing the user to find friends and share pages directly with them immediately. What makes it a Web 2.0 application?: This is classified as a web 2.0 application because of its social networking capabilities which are similar to those of other sites such as myspace and facebook. Following this trend, but allowing for something new to be thrown in the mix is where it differs. Why did you choose it?: We chose this website because we found it very interesting how it gives you the ability to “stumble” across websites that you would most likely never wind up finding other than spending years of your life sifting through google search results. .

How does this company make money?: This company makes money by allowing for advertising on their homepage. They also allow advertisers at low volumes into the mix of pages being stumbled and except paid memberships referred to as “Sponsors.” The creators made a large sum of money when EBAY purchased the company in 2007 for about $75 million dollars. Evaluate the application based on a 1-10 (10 being the best and 1 being the worst): Ease of use: 10 Functionality: 10 (as far as what is promised by the company) Practicality: 6.5 Time Killing Ability: 10 How does it compare with similar programs?: We feel as though stumbleupon.com is just as good if not better than the majority of other programs like it. A great example of a similar program is digg.com. Unlike stumbleupon.com, digg.com brings the news to a homepage and then redirects you. This can be seen as both convenient and inconvenient depending on how you wish to use the websites; digg.com is much better if you are looking for a something specific, however if you are looking for something much less specific stumbleupon.com will provide you with endless options. What do you wish it did that it doesn’t?: Personally I wish that there was a page that I could go to and view a log of my stumbling and the pages that I crossed over a 24 hour period. This would make it much easier to remember where everything was without having to bookmark all of the pages that I enjoy

To make things easier, a stumbleupon.com toolbar should be downloaded to be displayed below the URL address. This toolbar contains the “Stumble!” button which allows the user to randomly bring up everything from pictures, videos, text, and other applications that relate to one of the users specified interests. BEGIN STUMBLING!!!
