Student Government in K12 Schools : Student Government in K12 Schools Grant Cotterell SUU Literature Review: Literature Review Eccles and Barber found that students who become involved in student government are neither more nor less likely to engage in risky behavior such as underage drinking. They did find that these students are more likely to enjoy school, have a high GPA and attend college at age 21. ( Eccles and Barber, 1999) Eccles , J. S., & Barber, B. L. (1999). Student council, volunteering, basketball, or marching band what kind of extracurricular involvement matters?. Journal of Adolescent Research ,  14 (1), 10-43. Retrieved from Literature Review: Literature Review James Youniss of the Catholic University of America wrote that students involved in voluntary student councils are the “strongest positive predictor of voting and low degrees of political alienation.” He also noted that students in low-income areas often have the lowest degree of involvement in student government. However, when given the opportunity and resources they spontaneously identify the need to have a voice in the making of policy on such matters as discipline, harassment and mandated tests. ( Youniss , 2011) Youniss , J. (2011). Civic Education: What Schools Can Do to Encourage Civic Identity and Action. Applied Developmental Science, 15(2), 98-103. Literature Review: Literature Review Marc Brasof wrote about Constitution High School, a charter school in Philadelphia that has implemented a student government modeled on the United States Constitution. This council has implemented new rules for student behavior and procedures for conflict resolution. They have seen great success in improving the behavior of their students. ( Brasof , 2011) Brasof , M. (2011). STUDENT INPUT improves behavior, fosters leadership. Phi Delta Kappan , 93(2), 20-24. Reconnecting democratic classroom and garbage collectors. Conclusion: Conclusion Today’s students are tomorrow’s political leaders. Student councils are not making earth-shattering decisions. A student council president cannot ban tests or get chocolate milk in all the drinking fountains. However, a student council member can give a voice to their classmates. A student council member can work hard to see their vision become reality in the form of a service project, dance, or event. Student’s educational experiences are enriched by their experience on student council. Students can be trained to become effective leaders. A student who is now giving morning announcements over the intercom may someday be addressing the nation as president. It is important to give tomorrow’s leaders every opportunity to be good and effective leaders.
