With low commodity prices farmers try to produce more. Fertilizers promote deterioration of soil structure and fertility and leads to water contamination and eutrophication, as mineral components are easily leached out of soil. While it can create economies of scale monoculture threatens biological diversity, makes fields more susceptible to devastating pest outbreaks, and therefore favors reliance on chemical pesticides.
