1 Stephen Sutphin January 31, 2014 FYS Prof. Blanco State of The Union Examination The First point I would like to discuss in my examination is the part when President Obama commended his wife on reducing childhood obesity rates in America. I would like to call out the First lady and President on this because as a kid who had this program thrown onto me my senior year of high school I can honestly say that it was pure hell. The rate of obesity did in fact decline but not in a healthy way, kids were simply not eating the food or when they did they were simply not getting enough food to support there bodies. Take me for instance, I’m 6 foot 8 inches tall and 315 pounds, I’m not fat I’m athletic and has always been involved in sports through out my life playing basketball, football, and running track. When the US Government looks at me on paper I’m considered to be obese and unhealthy. My senior year I would go to lunch knowing that I wouldn’t get enough food to eat. It wasn’t only me either, it would be my friends and everybody around the cafeteria So technically yes, Michelle Obama reduced obesity but she did it by nearly starving kids and taking away the only meal some kids get in a day. The other point I would like to discuss is the one where Obama said that opportunity is who we are. We are controlled a strict government and our opportunities are taken away sometimes before we even have a chance to get them. In America we give stuff to people because of their name more over

2 theirqualifications. I was the most qualified person for the job and the coach even told me I was the most qualified for the spot and could literally play basketball for any college in the state of West Virginia I wanted to but he couldn’t keep me on the team. This just goes to show that we are not always given equal opportunity. These are the two points I picked out of the state of the union address.
