Spreading Smiles Through Learning : Spreading Smiles Through Learning Community Service Project Project Report : Name(s) of students who completed the project . Eman Amjad Khan Volunteers: Eman’s mother Tayyaba; Eman’s friend Natalia; Eman’s sister Aaliyan. Project Title: Spreading Smiles Through Learning   Social Issue Focused : Illiteracy and poor state of Government schools.   Target Area/ Community : Basti Khahi in Sadiqabad Punjab, which is like a small village. The people living here are generally poor, working as maids, drivers, gardeners, servants etc. My project was in ‘Govt. Boys Elementary School Basti Khahi.’ Although its name suggests otherwise, it is actually a school for boys and girls both. This project would be helpful to the school staff in taking a load off their shoulders and for the students there. Project was done on 8 th March, 2014.     Project Report PowerPoint Presentation: What have I/we done to respond to the social issue I/we have selected? Our project action details are as follows. Government schools lack funding to pay their teachers let alone hold any constructive & interactive activities for their students, so my volunteers and I planned activities, took school supplies for the children who cannot afford them, and sang educational songs and poems with the preschoolers. We taught them some basic words of English. We gave resource material to their teachers. We held drawing/ colouring competitions between the kids and then gave snacks and gifts to all the participants. What was the outcome or the end result of the project? The children had a great time , they ENJOYED learning, which was my basic aim for this project. They learnt new things as did their teachers. I learned from the children and the teachers. We planned a visit of the school’s teachers to my school so they may learn from my teachers as well. And now, God willing, I will keep up with this and visit the school at least once a month with more supplies and better activities.   What were the learning experiences for me? I learned how to make do with things because I did not know how many children there would be and I was not expecting such a large number ( there were more than 300 kids.) I fell short of supplies as I had expected around 50 children, so I improvised. I had to speak to and hold activities for a large group, so it made me more confident, I learned how to get attention from everyone in the room. I am generally a shy person, but I did not care, and I did all the activities confidently with the teachers looking on. I learned how to deal with little children and how to be more patient. I realized just how blessed I am to have such a good education, I learned not to be wasteful and ungrateful and utilize everything I have, for these children have nothing yet they are SO enthusiastic about learning and so talented. I felt if they had the proper resources, they could do so well. This was the first time I visited the school, I had been expecting something COMPLETELY different and was truly surprised and saddened by what I saw, have a look for yourself… The children sit in the open ground, no roof over their heads to shield them from the harsh Sadiqabadi sun, yet they are still so enthusiastic about learning. There are 4 class rooms total, but there are around 450 students. This little one was exceptionally shy.  : The children sit in the open ground, no roof over their heads to shield them from the harsh Sadiqabadi sun, yet they are still so enthusiastic about learning. PowerPoint Presentation: The children were very happy that we came and had a lot of fun! When it was time for us to leave, they all came and shook hands with us, some of them did it more than thrice! They all started chanting, “ Miss, ap kul ayengi? Miss, ap phir kub ayengi?” ( Translation: Miss, will you come tomorrow? Miss, when will you come again?) One of the girls, Samreen, gave me her necklace as a gift because she said she had so much fun! Another little girl said, “ Mai roz ghar jaake raat ko yaad kerti hun ke maine aaj kya kia, aj mujhe bohat maza ayega yaad kerke!” ( Translation: When I go home, every night, I go over everything I did that day, today I will have a lot of fun remembering everything.) This almost brought tears to my eyes and I promised them all that I’d visit again, and that they better remember me when I come the next time!  Then I told them all that they should study hard, and never leave school no matter how hard or boring it seems, and said a few things about how important ‘purhna likhna’, education is.
