COLLEGES : WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? COLLEGES FANS' BEHAVIOR AT GAMES BECOMING INCREASINGLY FOUL “Whatever became of sportsmanship? Or civility? Or respect? In far too many college basketball arenas, those terms are yesterday's news. Fan misbehavior has become an epidemic. What once were good-natured fun have become over-the-top personal attacks on college students who happen to play basketball.” Dick Jerardi, Philadelphia Daily News, March 24, 2004 “While support of our team may be well-intentioned, displays of profanity simultaneously debase our team, our athletes and our university.” Dan Mote, University of Maryland President WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? COLLEGES : WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? COLLEGES OHIO STATE U FANS REACTED TO PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS REQUESTING PROPER FAN BEHAVIOR AS “OFFENSIVE” PARENTS RESPONDED NEGATIVELY TO CORREPONDENCE TO REQUEST THEIR KIDS TO ACT RESPONSIBLY BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER OSU—MSU GAME RIOTS, FIRES, DESTROYED CARS MARK FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL GAME WINS AND DEFEATS University of Maryland; West Virginia University; Ohio State University WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? HIGH SCHOOLS : WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? HIGH SCHOOLS In western Pennsylvania, a parent came out of the stands, picked up a basketball official and body-slammed him to the court. The official was knocked unconscious and suffered a severe concussion. A top high school basketball team was beaten in a game that ended in an on-court brawl among fans in which a coach was hit with a bottle and five people were treated at a hospital. At a NYS middle school at conclusion of a girls’ soccer game, other team ignored, called unmentionable names, gave middle finger and spit on hands before shaking hands of home team. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? YOUTH SPORTS : WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? YOUTH SPORTS NYS Youth Soccer Referee: “I’ve seen parents yell at kids (8,9,10 years old) for not passing ball to their child; for missing shots; for committing fouls. I have seen coaches turn their backs on kids after letting goals in.” A Utah referee kicked by an angry parent after a youth football game gives up refereeing Deputy sheriffs patrol sidelines of youth football games Slide 6: SPORTS FANS BEHAVIOR LOCALLY LAST YEAR SIMILAR BEHAVIOR BY SPORTS FANS IN OTHER SCHOOLS AND DISTRICTS IN OUR COUNTY FIGHT ERUPTS DURING ST. JOHN FISHER AND NAZARETH COLLEGE BASKETBALL GAME SHERIFF DEPUTIES CALLED TO RESTORE ORDER BASKETBALL PLAYERS AND FANS DISCIPLINED PENFIELD SPORTS FAN BEHAVIORS: STUDENTS EJECTED FOR FIGHTING AT FOOTBALL AND SOCCER GAMES MOSH PIT RESULTS IN MINOR INJURIES TO SEVERAL STUDENTS AT ICE HOCKEY GAME STUDENT SECTIONS CHANT SEXUAL AND PERSONAL TAUNTS AT EACH OTHER AT BASKETBALL AND ICE HOCKEY CONTESTS WHAT IS WRONG? : WHAT IS WRONG? Increase in profane, aggressive, violent and destructive behavior, before, during and after the game Belief and attitude that this behavior is appropriate behavior for athletic competitions Increased costs of security In Penfield we reduced supplies 10%, while costs for security have doubled Sports officials are quitting, along with some coaches and players Mental and physical injuries WHAT ARE CONSEQUENCES? WE’RE GOING TO “TAKE BACK THE GAME” IT’S NOT ABOUT THE GAME ANYMORE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP : GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP To be sure that we promote good sportsmanship, please reflect on your behaviors to ensure they meet the following: Ask yourself are my actions: HONORABLE? RESPONSIBLE? RESPECTFUL? And do my actions: PROMOTE COOPERATION Slide 9: If the answer to these questions is “YES”, the you will have helped create the proper arena for High School Competition. If the answer to these questions is “NO”, then it could be assumed that you wish to not participate any further in school sponsored athletic events. IF THE ANSWER IS “YES”. . .YOU WILL : IF THE ANSWER IS “YES”. . .YOU WILL Applaud during the introduction of players, coaches, and officials Remove hats, stand and show respect throughout the singing of anthems and pledges Keep all cheers positive Accept decisions of official (s) and supervisors Remember the competition is a game Demonstrate genuine concern for an injured player (s), regardless of team Encourage fellow spectators to display sportsmanlike conduct Applaud at the end of the contest for the performance of all participants IF YOU WISH TO CONTINUE PARTICIPATION AT OUR ATHLETIC EVENTS, YOU WILL REFRAIN FROM: : IF YOU WISH TO CONTINUE PARTICIPATION AT OUR ATHLETIC EVENTS, YOU WILL REFRAIN FROM: Showing disrespect while teams are being introduced and when teams, cheerleaders, or drill teams are performing (ex. Chanting over a cheer; holding up newspapers; turning backs). Making derogatory chants, songs and/or gestures. Acting in ways that take away from the game (ex. Using names, numbers, nicknames or ethnic slurs, profanity, artificial noise makers; antagonizing the other team’s fans) Booing or heckling officials’ decisions Creating unsafe situations (ex. Throwing things onto the field; moshing; rushing field at the end of games) NYS PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATIONWHAT IS SPORTSMANSHIP? : NYS PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATIONWHAT IS SPORTSMANSHIP? Sportsmanship (noun): Sportsmanship is a demonstration of generosity and genuine concern for others. It is a concrete measure of understanding and commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity. Slide 13: The MCPSAA has worked hard to create a sense of teamwork, respect, responsibility and perspective. Let all competitions reflect mutual respect among coaches, participants, officials and SPECTATORS.
