So Many Devices: Bringing Them All Together Presented by Andrea Keith Director –Client Engagement
School-Supplied Devices • Over 10 million iPads in use in schools today (Apple) • 81% of educators had or planned to adopt iPads (Forbes) • 31% had or planned to adopt Chromebooks (Forbes)
Risks of Providing Devices
Great Intentions…. What Went Wrong?
Is BYOD the answer? • District pilots of BYOD increased 47% from 2011 to 2012 • 73% of urban parents would likely buy a mobile device for their student to use at school
The Buying Decision Process
Flip the Process DeviceContentTools ToolsContentDevice
Step 1 Determine and publicize goals and objectives • Consider requirements for various devices, various end users; student safety and privacy • Get buy in from stakeholdersinternal and external
Step 2 Select core, device-agnostic platform/tools • Start with basic tools that will provide communication, collaboration, productivity on all devices • Plan and implement at least one consistent, flexible tool or service across the district
Step 3 Select/Plan content • What do you already have that can be accessed digitally? • Provide basics that cover Common Core or state standards. • Insert national website • Just because it’s in a free app doesn’t mean it’s good but teachers can be the best shoppers.
Step 4 Ensure adequate connectivity • Bandwidth, bandwidth, bandwidth! • It’s not just the size of your pipe, it’s the shape of your traffic. • All routers are not created equal. • Create the highway before you give everyone a car. • Plan for rush hour.
Step 5 Select devices and/or BYOD • One device may not fit all students. • Don’t be dazzled by cool or new. • Beware of sales people. • Solicit lessons learned from sources you trust. • Pilot, but not in isolation.
