See a Need…Fill a Need! Inventors notice when things don’t work right. Inventors try many different solutions Inventors look for the best way to solve a problem: the best design, the best materials, the cleanest, the safest, and the easiest ways to do a job. So…. What does an inventor need?

Inventors look for the best way to solve a problem: the best design, the best materials, the cleanest, the safest, and the easiest ways to do a job.

So….

What does an inventor need?

Dedication Being willing to keep trying: Even if it doesn’t work the first time, the tenth time, or the hundredth time Even if people don’t believe you can do it

Margaret Knight Grew up in New England; lived in Maine, Manchester NH, Springfield MA Even as a kid, she invented things: toys for her brothers, a foot warmer for her mother, a safety device for the looms in the mills where she and her family worked. Many people were surprised that a girl would be interested in tools and machines. At 18, Mattie worked in a factory that made paper bags. Square bags were still folded by hand. She spent two years trying to design a machine to fold paper bags. She took her design to a machine shop to have a prototype built—and someone stole her design!

Even as a kid, she invented things: toys for her brothers, a foot warmer for her mother, a safety device for the looms in the mills where she and her family worked.

Mattie proved in court that this was her invention, and went on to patent it and 21 more inventions.

Activity: Fold a Paper Cup Follow the directions to fold an origami paper cup. Can you think of ways to improve this cup? How else might you fold it? How many steps does it take? Could a robot or other machine fold a cup like this? How complicated would it be?

You need…onions? Before windshield wipers, drivers would smear pieces of carrots or onions across the glass to create an oily film to try to repel the water.

Activity: Test Your Materials Which materials work well as windshield wipers? Do they work well once? More than once? What are the drawbacks or problems with some materials? If you were designing a completely new way to clean windshields, what might you do?

Rachael Charles What would life be like if you couldn’t get water that was safe to drink right from your sink? Approximately 1 billion people do not have safe water to drink or to bathe. Unsafe water can be deadly for nearly 4 million kids per year. 8 th grade science project

Other Solar Solutions

Activity: Bright Light, Hot Water? Investigate the materials provided to create a solar puddle. Which ones do you think will work best? Test your hypothesis by assembling your puddle and putting it under one of the lamps. Check the temperature with a thermometer. Does it rise?
