Slide 1: Mini-Project #2 EdTech 513 John Uriarte Spring 2009 Modality and Redundancy Principles Slide 2: Modality and Redundancy Principles Objective The objective is to instruct the viewer about modality and redundancy principles as they apply to multimedia. After instruction, the learner will correctly identify applications of modality and redundancy principles. Slide 3: The Modality Principle: when a graphic is present, it is better to have spoken text rather than having written text. Slide 4: Example of the Modality Principle Offense Defense Corner Kick Slide 5: Example Continued Corner Kick Offense Defense Slide 6: Visual Overload Using pictures and printed words can overload the visual channel. The learner is trying to take in the image and its meaning, while trying to read and understand the text. Slide 7: Violation of the Modality Principle Corner Kick Offense Defense Goalie Soccer Ball The ball is then put back into play by the offensive team, or the team with the blue smiley faces, by kicking the ball from the quarter circle located in the corner of the field nearest to where the ball left the field of play. Slide 8: The Redundancy Principle One: when you are using an image, don’t use text and identical narration at the same time. The Redundancy Principle Two: some situations call for the narration of onscreen text. Slide 9: Example of the Redundancy Principle One Pitcher: Pitches the ball from the pitcher’s mound to the catcher. Catcher: Crouches behind home plate and receives pitches thrown by the pitcher. In P.E., the catcher stays behind the backstop until the ball is hit. They also receive throws from fielders attempting to make outs at home plate. Pitcher Catcher Left Fielder Center Fielder Right Fielder Third Base Shortstop Second Base First Base Slide 10: Brain Overload The reason why we don’t want to have an image, text, and identical narration, is because the learner will overload the visual channels of working memory. Slide 11: The Redundancy Principle Two: some situations call for the narration of onscreen text. Example of the Redundancy Principle Two When there is no diagram or image. When there is plenty of time to understand the image. When the learner is not a native speaker or has a learning disability. When the narration is long and complex or has new vocabulary. Slide 12: Assessment 1 Does the following slide show: Redundancy Principle One Modality Principle Violation of Modality Principle Redundancy Principle Two Slide 13: The crust of the Earth is composed of a great variety of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. The crust is the layer above the mantle. Slide 14: The correct answer is D, redundancy principle two. Slide 15: Assessment 2 Does the following slide show: Redundancy Principle One Modality Principle Violation of Modality Principle Redundancy Principle Two Slide 16: Pollination Slide 17: The correct answer is B, modality principle.
