Slovakia  The Slovak Republic is an inland country situated in the centre of Europe.  Its territory is 49 035 km2 and it has 5.43 million inhabitants.  Since 1 May 2004 Slovakia has been the member of The European Union.  Since 1 January 2009 it has been the 16th member of the Eurozone with the official currency Euro, which has replaced the Slovak crown.

Bratislava  Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia is the most populous city and by its territory the largest city in Slovakia.  It has 465 300 inhabitants.  The most important landmarks of Bratislava are Bratislava Castle and St. Martin’s cathedral.

The High Tatras

The High Tatras  The High Tatras are the highest mountains in Slovakia with the alpine character.  Their territory is 260 km2. The highest mountain is the peak Gerlach, which is 2 654 metres high.  There are 35 valleys and 120 mountain lakes in the High Tatras.  Since 1948 the High Tatras have been a national park called „TANAP“.  In 1993 the High Tatras were declared the biospheric nature reserve of Unesco.

Šaštín - Stráže

Šaštín - Stráže  More then a half of the territory of Šaštín – Stráže is formed by the plain in which at Stráže juts out hilly country.  The highest sea level is at Stráže which reaches the heighest of 256 metres above the sea level. In the southwestern part of Šaštín the large continuous areas of non chalky sands are found.

Šaštín - Stráže  Šaštín – Stráže is a polyfunctional town. In the illustration we can see the historical centre of Šaštín with its incomplete quadrilateral square, the church of St. John Bosco, the chapel and parsonage.  In 1998 Šaštín had a population of 4920 (2458 men and 2462 women).

Šaštín - Stráže  As far as the national composition of its inhabitants was concerned, the strongest nationality were the Slovaks and the Czechs. We could also find widely spread minorities of the Hungarians, the Germans, the Hebrews and the minority of Romany inhabitants (7%).

Šaštín - Stráže  The population of our town are believers. The predominant religion is the Roman Catholic religion.  The economically active inhabitants work in industry, agriculture, forestry and service.

The Basilica Minor of Our Lady of Sorrows

The Basilica Minor of Our Lady of Sorrows  The history of Šaštín – Stráže has always been connected with the national sanctuary, The Basilica Minor of Our Lady of Sorrrňows, the patron of Slovakia.  It dates from 1736.  Basilica is famous for its statue of Our Lady of Sorrows which was made in 1564.

The Basilica Minor of Our Lady of Sorrows  In 1732 Imrich Esterházy, the archbishop permited to honour it. Jean Joseph Chamant and Lukas Kraker are the authors of beautiful paintings and other decorations.  Nowadays the Salesians take care for basilica and its monastery.

The Basilica Minor of Our Lady of Sorrows  Šaštín and its famous basilica are wellknown and attractive for both Slovak and foreign tourists. Thousands of believers go and visit our town especially during Whitsunday, when we celebrate the holy spirit coming down from heaven and on 15 September, when there is a great celebration of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Šaštín - Stráže The climate of Šaštín – Stráže is warm, mildly humid with cold winters.  The average yearly temperature of the air is about 10 °C, in July it is usually about 20 °C. This summer was very hot. Sometimes it was about 35 °C.  The average yearly rainfall is below 60% and the average number of days with stormy weather is 20.  The longest river is the Myjava (6 km long at Šaštín). The waters of the Myjava are taken away by the river Morava to the Danube and the Black Sea. 

Šaštín - Stráže  The whole territory of Šaštín – Stráže is also rich in flora and fauna. In the Zahorska Plain there is mostly woodland – mixed and coniferous forests (e.g. the pine). We can also find the oak, birch, locust tree, ...  In the forests we can meet a stag, roedeer hind, wild boar, hare, fox and other kinds of minor beasts of pray.
