The learner gets the project choice he/she want, even if they are the only learner in one school to choose a particular project – Other learners can be found and matched within other UK schools to work together on their chosen project. e-engineering project means, employers, engineers, mentors, tutors and others can see and share project ideas and problems with learners regardless of time or geography e-engineering, e working, e communicating and e business, are efficient and productive working tools and here to stay – diploma learners needs these e skills Using Pro Engineer type software (computer aided engineering) learners can develop real and exciting designs, innovations and virtual models that will stimulate learning - employers / businesses may want to use and buy the innovations developed by diploma learners. Slide 9: science council 081106 SEMTA Copyright 2006 9 It is not realistic or sustainable to source enough real engineering projects from employers year on year to satisfy and stretch diploma learners Engineering technology diploma level 3 learners will enjoy using professional software and will stretch the minds of supporting employers, engineers, tutors, mentors with “out of the box” thinking etc. Studying A level equivalent or better maths, physics and BTEC National equivalent or better engineering theory and practice, while working on a demanding, challenging and exciting engineering project will give the academic learning more relevance and therefore improve the academic learning process Finding enough technically demanding and safe work experience employer based placements to undertake serious engineering study is both unrealistic and unsustainable. 14-19 Engineering Technology Diploma Level 3 Why – e engineering Project Slide 10: science council 081106 SEMTA Copyright 2006 10 14-19 Engineering Diploma Level 3 Principal Learning Sector-related (Maths, Physics and Engineering Technology) Determines diploma title (Engineering) Minimum 50% applied in real or realistic environments (Engineering Project) Generic Learning Functional skills (Function Maths, ICT and English Level 3, Optional Level 4) Personal, employability, learning and thinking Skills (Engineering Project) Project (Engineering Project) Experiential learning cycle (Engineering Project) Additional Specialist Learning Optional units (Engineering Level 3 Units, e.g. C & G, EAL, Edexcel etc) Choice (Project Type and Project Partners) Specialisation (Engineering Development / Design, Manufacture / Construct, Install, Operate, Maintain, Safety /Quality or Test, etc) Complementary (Pro Engineer, MS Project, etc.) Slide 11: science council 081106 SEMTA Copyright 2006 11 Feedback from stakeholders Need chemistry/metallurgy (knowledge of materials) or Physical Sciences rather than straight Physics Will the infrastructure cope with the large number of learners doing different projects Teachers will need a lot of encouragement to get involved in this extra project work Universities require A Level Grades A or B – 220 UCAS tariff points for admission Project should be one short learning module 2 Projects are needed per diploma, one in first year and one in second year Projects should generate an “artefact”, e.g hardware, model or electronics Projects should be rotated every 2 years, so the overlapping project group cannot copy ideas etc. A Project should be run in one school, a project team from several schools will not work University summer schools are difficult – lack of funding and resources Must take account of Professional Institutions requirements Diploma learners need practical and effective “hands on” understanding of how hardware is manufactured. Employers must to be consulted, so the diploma is “fit for purpose”.
