Lin’s paintings are characterized by the hallmarks of traditional Chinese painting’s perspective and stylistic ink brush techniques, while also utilizing the impasto, colors, and boldness of Expressionistic European painters like Henri Matisse. A highly influential figure in China’s modern painting movements, he went on to teach Zao Wou-Ki, Wu Guanzhong, and other renown artists. Born on November 22, 1900 in Guangdong, China, he spent the early years of his career in Paris and Berlin studying painting in the early 1920s. Drawing on these various influences, his figures are often set against a monochromatic background of ink wash and line drawing, creating a dynamic and brightly colored composition. Unfortunately, when Lin returned to China he was caught in the conflicts of the Sino-Japanese War and the Cultural Revolution, during which much of his work was destroyed. Lin spent the last years of his life living in Hong Kong, attempting to recreate the paintings that had been lost. He died on August 12, 1991 in Hong Kong, China
