Setting Meaningful New Year’s Resolutions: Beginning with a Self Assessment Every year millions of people around the world set New Year’s resolutions to start a new. Interestingly, most of those ambitions require an outward focus. According to the University of Scranton, Journal of Clinical Psychology, (http://www.statisticbrain.com/new-years-resolution-statistics/), the top three resolutions made for 2014 include: losing weight, getting organized, and spending less money. The report goes on to say thatabout half of Americans make resolutions and only 8% are successful. So what does this mean for most of us? What it means is 75% keep their resolutions through the first week of the new year while 64% keep their resolutions beyond a month, and 46% are still keeping their resolutions 6 months later (percentages reflect multiple resolutions). So what’s the point of making New Year’s resolutions that are either unattainable, external to ourselves and /or meaningless? Although there have been numerous articles on how to start 2014, below is an alternative to the run-of-the-mill approach to begin the New Year. Begin with a self-assessment. Questions to motivate you to begin, update, or complete your personal &professional New Year’s Resolutions 1. Who are you? 2. What is your life’s purpose? 3. What are your strengths (i.e. natural abilities, hard-wiring, talents, passions, gifts)? 4. What are your challenges? 5. What are your blind spots (in order to know, you must be open to constructive feedback)? 6. What are you passionate about? 7. Where you going and what are is your plan for getting there? 8. What have you accomplished from the goals that you set on January 1, 2013? 9. What have you not accomplished from the goals that you set on January 1, 2013 and why? Who or what prevented you or is preventing you from fulfilling those goals? 10. What do you value? 11. Who makes up your support system? 12. Whom do you trust? 13. Who are your mentors (professional, personal, spiritual, community, health, and other) 14. In what areas do you need further development? 15. Are you open to constructive feedback? If so, who in your life can you depend on to provide constructive feedback to you in areas where you need to grow? 16. If you are not open to constructive feedback – why? 17. If you could compliment yourself on one thing, what would it be? 18. If you could improve one thing about yourself, what would it be? 19. If each word you said about yourself, wrapped itself around you like a piece of clothing, what would your “self-talk” wardrobe look like? Created by: Valerie A.
