(2010) Balancing opportunities and risks in teenagers use of the internet: The role of online skills and internet self-efficacy. New Media & Society , 12(2): 309-329. The Dilemma PowerPoint Presentation: “The Challenge of Mobile Literacy in Schools” Sarah Pavey, Box Hill School , Online Information, 30 th November 2011 In the UK, 91 per cent of children and young people aged 12 to 17 have their own mobile phone and 12 per cent say they access the internet through their phone. All UK mobile phone networks offer a level of filtering which can be activated when the phone is purchased or later by phoning customer services. The level of filtering is based on whether the registered user is over 18 or not. However, it is questionable whether parents are aware of this and take advantage of it. If a child accesses the internet using wifi they by-pass any filtering which may be switched on at a network level. Handset manufacturers need to look at integrating parental controls in their handsets Byron, Tanya, Department for Education (DFE), corp creator. (2010) Do we have safer children in a digital world? Older pupils feel that filtering should be less restrictive .” “Many schools do not allow mobile devices, or restrict their use 63 % of all pupils reported that they do not or only sometimes adhere to policies relating to mobile phone use, and adherence decreases with increasing age . “ Passey , D. Our experience was that if you give them the opportunity to use them, and you give them guidelines to go with that use, you won’t have problems.” “As for the kids, they loved using the phones for class work, but parents in the district have had mixed reactions, says Taylor. “Some thought we were crazy, and were very strongly opposed to it, and some embraced the idea initially. As time went on, about 90 percent came to say it was a good idea. They didn’t see it as a gadget, or as a replacement for learning, they saw it as a tool for learning .”” Rapp, D.
