Preliminary Planning of Smart Meter Roll-Outs

Where you are today ■ With the 3rd internal energy market package (electricity and gas) the European Union provided a guideline for a cost-benefit analysis for smart grid implementations; until 2020 smart meter installations up to 80 % Smart Grids Guideline 2012-04-27, Page 34: http://ec.europa.eu/energy/gas_electricity/smartgrids/doc/20120427_smartgrids_guideline.pdf ■ Irrespective of the preferred roll-out scenario (balanced roll-out, fast roll-out or complete roll-out) these are just a few of the questions that you should answer: ■ ■ Which information regarding my meters and installations are available right now? ■ What can I conclude from these data? ■ What is the geographical distribution of meters and meter types in my grid? ■ Is this to be changed? ■ What is the impact of the meter type selection on my grid infrastructure? ■ Which additional activities in a specific region might be triggered by my decision? ■ How to align a single-use, long-term requirement with my daily business? ■ ■ What does the chosen scenario mean for my company? … Facing a roll-out challenge with limited knowledge of the organizational and commercial impact © PROLOGA GmbH 2013 Folie 2

Complete Roll-Out of 3.000.000 Meters – ever thought about the Impact? A company owns 3m meters. The company plans to exchange all meters within 5 years. (Assumption: 200 workdays per year) Installation on site 30 minutes Configuration on site / remote 10 minutes Travel time (average) 10 minutes Site documentation 5 minutes. Back-office logistics incl. asset management 15 minutes Effort in total per meter: 70 minutes App. 6-7 meters installed by one team per day = app. 7000 meters per team within 5 years (7 meter per day * 1000 work days) Impact: you will need 429 teams for a roll-out of 3m meters in due time. *3.000.000 meters/70000 meters per team in 5 years = app. 429 teams Folie
