One of my primary duties these days is promoting workplace safety. Inspired by the upcoming St. Patrick's Day holiday, I wrote this article for our employees, as a way of encouraging them to be alert, aware and safe while on the job.

Safety is Not a Matter of LuckBy Kevin Panet, MS HRM, SPHR-CA When someone experiences an “accident” and escapes serious injury, you will often hear the words, “that guy was lucky.” Having a good safety program in place is not a matter of luck. It takes a combined effort of everyone doing their part to create a safe working environment, with high levels of safety awareness and alertness, and deliberate acts conducted safely and with appropriate care. To ensure you are purposefully living each day with safety in mind, take the following actions; 1. Be Alert, Be Aware: The vast majority of accidents happen because people simply stopped paying attention to what they were doing, or what was going on in their immediate surroundings. Also be aware of what is happening around you and be extra cautious if something doesn’t look right or is out of place. 2. Don’t Work Beyond Your Physical Capabilities: No one issued you a super hero costume at your new employee orientation. You need to know what you are physically capable of doing, safely and comfortably. If you are lifting, pushing or pulling a heavy object and you need help, ask for it. 3. Lift Safely: You’ve probably heard it many times before, but you need to practice what has been preached. Lift with your legs, not with your back. When lifting objects, keep them close to you and don’t over extend yourself. If you have to turn left or right, turn your entire body to face towards where you are working with an object, do not twist your torso. 4. Slow Down: We are often in a hurry to get from one place to another. Don’t run, walk to your destination. When driving, drive the speed limit. If it’s raining, drive slower than you normally would. And, drive defensively. If someone cuts you off, or appears to be driving erratically, let them go. You don’t want to meet that person by accident. 5. Limit Distractions: Many accidents happen because the individual was distracted. If you’re driving, don’t text. If someone calls your cell phone, let it go to voice mail unless you have a hands free device. If you are involved in moving something heavy, and there’s a lot of activity going on around you, try asking your fellow co-workers to settle down, and if it would help, ask them for assistance. After all, safety is everyone’s business. These are just a few tips to keep in mind as we strive to create a safe work environment for our staff, our clients and our visitors. Luck has nothing to do with safety. Having a safe work environment is the result of a series of deliberate acts, and an attitude that includes awareness, alertness and caution. Working together, we can make sure that each of us goes home at night without suffering a workplace injury or illness.
