Roy Adaptation theory by melissa vigil: Roy Adaptation theory by melissa vigil Maryville university introduction: introduction Welcome, this presentation is on The Roy Adaptation Theory by Dr. Callista Roy. She believed nursing interventions are needed when a person is ill or potentially ill and the added stress or weakened coping mechanism makes the person’s usual attempts to cope ineffective. Nursing is needed to help the person adapt, contributing to health, quality of life, or dying with dignity ( Meleis , 2012, p. 330). The following slides will give an in-depth review of her theory, her education and its application. Theory chosen – Roy adaptation theory Dr. Callista Roy : Theory chosen – Roy adaptation theory Dr. Callista Roy Rational for choice – The Roy Adaptation Theory by Dr.Callista Roy is valuable to clinical practice. It utilizes the nursing process to help the patient adapt to their situation within their changing environment. This theory has been integrated into nursing practice and curriculum worldwide. This theory adapts to many clinical situations and adds to nursing knowledge. This theory is also used as a foundation for new theory development as well as using it in conjunction with other theories, it has become a part of the nursing profession and used throughout the world. It has been incorporated into nursing curriculum, lectures and workshops. It is used daily guiding nurses in many clinical settings. It leads to advancements in nursing and research. . Examples of professional use: A study was done by Rogers and Keller (2011), using RAM in adaptation of the elderly population to promote physical activity. Gurel et al. (2010), did a study on using RAM in adaptation of newborns born with myelomeningocele to extra uterine life. Otten and Chen (2011), studied the use of RAM in relation to the chaos theory for students to better understand adaptation in a work environment affected by a drastic change in staff. FOR THE GOOD OF THE INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY: FOR THE GOOD OF THE INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY The nursing profession has a social mandate to contribute to the good of the individual and society. I agree with the theoretical system of knowledge, seeing the patient as a bio-psycho-social being (ill or potentially ill), who adapts to changing environment with the assistance of the nurse through the use of the nursing process to promote adaptation ( Meleis , 2012, p.330). The nurse plays the key role in adaptation for the patient and must take a role of responsibility to help their patients adapt successfully to their situation and their changing environment.
