What were Roman laws like? Dealt with serious eg murder and not so serious eg fighting Also dealt with cleanliness – homeowners responsible for street outside house Children learnt the laws at school Who tackled crime? No police force Patrols introduced 6A.D. By Augustus – 5000 soldiers to stop riots; 7000 vigiles to patrol the night and put out fires; 9000 Praetorian Guards to protect the Emperor No crime investigation – only a direct response to crime Therefore very little crime solved Could a criminal get a fair trial? Minor crimes in a Magistrate’s Court Victim had to get the criminal and the evidence Serious crimes go before judge and jury Innocent until proven guilty Punishments To deter others – therefore BRUTAL
