Robots in Space:  Robots in Space ECOMP 5018 April 8, 2006 Jason, Mike Joe, Bernie & Alissa Robots :  Robots Robots have been defined in many ways over time. A very generalized definition would be that robots perform tasks that are too dull, dirty, delicate or dangerous for people. Controlling Space Robots:  Controlling Space Robots All space robots are basically quite similar, in that each has a controller, sensors, actuators, radio communications and a power supply. The sensors provide information about the robot's environment. The controller processes the information from the sensors and instructions radioed from ground control, and sends appropriate command signals to the actuators. The actuators and drive convert the command signals into actions. Probes:  Probes Unmanned spacecraft which is launched into space in order to collect data about the solar system and beyond. Space probes are not necessarily designed to return to Earth. Rovers:  Rovers This vehicle can move around the surface of another planet transporting scientific instruments. Teleoperators:  Teleoperators Robot that uses both human intelligence and mechanical manipulation. These robots require a person in the loop. This has been achieved with the space shuttle arm. Robotnaut:  Robotnaut This robot is designed to go outside the space shuttle and perform space walks and other humanlike tasks. Future Space Robots:  Future Space Robots About the size of a softball, the Personal Satellite Assistant (PSA) will be equipped with a variety of sensors to monitor environmental conditions in a spacecraft such as the amount of oxygen, carbon dioxide and other gases in the air, the amount of bacterial growth, air temperature and air pressure. The robot will also have a camera for video conferencing, navigation sensors, wireless network connections, and even its own propulsion components enabling it to operate autonomously throughout the spacecraft.
