His family was poor and as a youngster he delivered milk and took other odd jobs to help his family. Slide 16: Roberto's Statue Outside PNC Park Slide 17: PNC Park Roberto Clemente Bridge Slide 18: This bridge was renamed on August 6, 1998 in his honor. The bridge is closed to vehicular traffic on Pirate’s game days. Roberto Clemente Bridge Slide 19: A hero is a person admired for their achievements and qualities. Roberto Clemente: HERO Slide 20: Roberto was made fun of because he spoke in a thick accent and had trouble learning a new language, English. He also met racism and discrimination in their crudest forms. He fought these injustices by: 1. Becoming an active defender of his rights and the rights of others. 2. Defended players rights to demand better working conditions and benefits. Puerto Rican Flag Slide 21: Before his death, Roberto was already considered a hero. He set up baseball clinics for kids and visited sick children in local hospitals. He was so popular, that when he got married, thousands of people filled the plaza outside of the church. Slide 22: Clemente’s name has been used for stadiums, schools, hospitals and highways in Puerto Rico, the United States, Nicaragua and places as distant as Germany.
