Rice Protein and the Unfounded Fear of Heavy Metal Ingestion Axiom Foods, the world’s largest and most innovative source for organic, chemicalfree, hexane-free and allergen-free Oryzatein Whole Grain Brown Rice Protein now produces an even more comprehensive line of all-natural ingredients. Fear mongering is defined as the use of fear to influence the opinions and actions of others towards some specific end—one which usually has a substantial financial benefit. Fear mongering is unfortunately quite a common tactic among the world of food and nutrition, because of the fact that "fear sells.” You may have come across a scientifically baseless fear regarding the purported danger of ingesting rice protein which he states will contaminate the human body with an excessiveamount of toxic heavy metals. This is a classic example of fear mongering, in this case Mr. Adams will benefit financially from spreading this rumor, as his sales of whey protein (an animal food supplement) on his web site will surely sky-rocket. This particular subject is personally quite worrisome for me as I have spent my career promoting a plant-based diet for health and longevity. When myths such as this spread like wildfire on the internet, it leads me to believe that many Americans may just shun plant foods in favor of animal foods, leading to an increased risk of chronic disease. So I have decided to write about the facts of the matterregarding plant foods and heavy metal contamination. Heavy metals exist naturally in the earth’s crust and are found in all healthy soils which sustain the plant kingdom. In fact, people who eat a plant-based diet will have a higher

concentration of heavy metals in their system compared to those who eat primarily animal foods, albeit, the levels are far from toxic. Companies that produce plant-based foods and ingredients are fully aware of the heavy metal content of plant foods. These highly reputable companies are extremely regulated and are all under the watchful eye of the USDA and FDA. Their products are tested on a regular basis for metal concentration by credentialed and certified laboratories. You should know that laboratories are not all created equally. In the case of Mr. Adams, the lab he has used to base his arguments on is not certified. Reputable labs are certified labs that are run by highly educated scientists who are skilled in conducting research and collecting data and have testing equipment that is frequently calibrated. Consumers need to trust information that is derived from certified labs with the assurance that the data is science-based and that the implications of the data are sound. I believe in reputable companies such as Garden of life, Growing Naturals, Sun Warrior and all the products that have been dragged through the mud this week. I've used them for my entire career. Scare tactics are not what should drive people to make nutrition decisions; scientific fact should be whatAmericans to make choices regarding their health and nutrition. Responsible health professionals should strive to motivate Americans to eat a more plant-based diet. This type of dietary strategy has been proven to benefit our health, our waistline, our environment, our wallets, and our conscience. Any fear mongering which goes against this mantra is unethical and a big step in the wrong direction. I am fond of quoting the wise words of Solomon in situations such as this “Be careful whose words you read and whose wisdom you trust.”
