Description

This lesson, written by Phillip Hines, helps young people understand that respect for parents in the home leads to respect for other authority figures later. It is the 11th lesson in the PEARLS book for Lads to Leaders.

Respect for Others Phillip Hines

“ Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father…”

What Does This Mean? Paul is writing to Timothy, a younger preacher. This does NOT mean that Timothy can never preach about issues facing older people. It also does NOT mean that, if he sees an older man sinning, he should just excuse it. It DOES mean that he should give proper respect to older Christians.

“… younger men as brothers.”

Meaning…? Timothy needs to remember that he is younger, too. Don’t “gang up” on younger brothers (or sisters) in Christ just because you are “the preacher.” Treat them like family (because you ARE family!).

Respect Should be Shown… From children toward parents (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1-3). Between husbands and wives (Ephesians 5:22; First Peter 3:1,7). From citizens toward the government (Romans 13:1-7; First Peter 2:13-16). From members toward elders (Hebrews 13:17). From Christians to ALL PEOPLE! (First Peter 2:17)
