Introduction  A certified public accountant (CPA), James Kasim studied accounting at California State University, Northridge, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in Business Administration. Additionally, he holds a master of business administration from the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, where he graduated with honors. With over 20 years of experience, James Kasim has served in various c-suite positions over his career.

Becoming an Accountant  To become an accountant, a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field is required. Occasionally, it is possible to hold an associate’s degree and gain experience through junior-level positions. Accountants looking to advance in the field can obtain CPA certification by passing the national exam and meeting the requirements of the state in which they would like to practice. State requirements may include completing a minimum number of credit hours at an accredited college and possessing experience in the accounting field. Furthermore, most states require continuing education to maintain certification.

Conclusion  Once the certification is received, an accountant is able to certify financial reports, including those to be filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which protects investors by requiring fair practices. In addition, a CPA is able to practice as an individual rather than as part of a larger firm.
