En los campos de Flandes se mecen las amapolas entre hileras de cruces que señalan nuestra tumba. Las alondras cantan desafiantes pese a todo; vuelan oyendo apenas el fragor de los cañones. Somos los muertos. Hace pocos días vivíamos, sentíamos el amanecer, veíamos el brillo del crepúsculo, amábamos y éramos amados... Ahora yacemos en los campos de Flandes. Resume nuestra lucha con el enemigo. De nuestras manos inertes te lanzamos la antorcha; es tu tarea mantenerla bien alta. Si faltas a la palabra que nos diste a los muertos, nunca descansaremos, aunque florezcan las amapolas en los campos de Flandes. JOHN McCRAE (primavera de 1915)
