Models of memory Remembering and forgetting

Memory • It is useful to think of memory as consisting of three stages or processes: • Encoding. This refers to the initial registration of information into memory and its conversion into a form or code that will allow storage to occur. • Storage (or retention). Memories are held for a period of time, and several theories have emerged as to how these stores are structured and what processes are required to store the memories. • Retrieval. This is the ability to access the stored memories when needed.

Models of memory • There are three models (or theories) of memory named on the specification and you must know, for each of these: – the distinguishing features/components – research evidence (studies) – evaluation
