Introduction  Douglas A. Seymour, DDS, strives to provide the highest quality dental care for each of his patients. In addition to providing routine dental care checkups, Douglas Seymour, DDS, also performs in-office procedures that help improve a patient’s oral health and quality of life. Among these procedures is tooth extraction.

About Tooth Extractions  There are a number of reasons and situations why a patient may need to have a tooth removed. In cases of advanced tooth decay, the infection may occur in the center of the tooth. While this type of infection may be treated with antibiotics or a root canal, sometimes it is necessary to remove the affected tooth. In addition to tooth decay, a tooth may need to be extracted due to gum disease. In cases of advanced gum disease, teeth may be loose in their sockets. For improved oral health, removing the affected teeth may be recommended as a last resort.

Conclusion  Before performing an extraction, a dentist should discuss the situation with the patient and address the patient’s concerns. Then, before the procedure, numbing agents are typically applied to make the process as painless and comfortable as possible.
