Understanding a written text: Extracting the required information from it as efficiently as possible Reading is the construction of meaning from a written message, relating the received information with the reader’s own general knowledge. Reading is an active process, which constantly involves guessing, predicting, checking and asking oneself questions. Reading is a silent and individual activity because the writer’s intention is for the text to be read rather than heard. What do we read?: What do we read? Understanding the lexical and structural meaning of the words phrases and sentences. Taking in complete phrases or groups of words at once and when reading aloud, use appropriate sounds, juncture, stress and intonation patterns, Guessing the meaning of an unfamiliar wword from the context. Consulting a dictionary to find out the meaning of an unfamiliar word, Skipping over unnecessary passages while skimming for information, Reading silently without lip movement, Distinguishing between the writer’s opinion and statement of facts; Locating the “topic sentence” of a paragraph, Making a summary of the important points of the passage, Inferring the mood of the writer, e.g serious, jocular, sarcastic etc Recognizing the meaning of various graphic signals, e.g punctuation marks, paragraph indentation, capitalization. etc How do we read – the main ways of reading are:: How do we read – the main ways of reading are: Skimming: quickly running one’s eyes over the text Scanning: quickly going through a text to find specific information Extensive reading: reading long texts Reading for pleasure/ fluency Personalized, lazy pace, as much exposure as the reader chooses. Intensive reading: reading short texts to extract information Reading for detail/ accuracy Developing reading skills – how to?: Developing reading skills – how to? Start with global understanding of the text and afterwards move towards detailed understanding: Builds students’ confidence Develops awareness of how texts are organized Encourages to find out what is in the text Use authentic texts Do not separate reading comprehension from other skills such as writing, listening and speaking. Present reading is an active skill: guessing, predicting, checking, asking questions, - responding to what is read. Give flexible and varied exercises. Define the aim of the exercise given. Make a clear distinction between teaching and testing/ What can we do in the classroom? : What can we do in the classroom? Encourage silent reading to develop efficient reading strategies Consider the text as a whole Accompany pictures, diagrams, Make guesses: what the text is about, who it is for, who wrote it, where it appeared… Skim through the text to see if you were right Ask questions referring to the content of the text Reread the text – answer the questions asked Reading Sub-skills: Reading Sub-skills Skimming: reading quickly to get the gist, main idea is focused, Useful in extensive reading Saves time PowerPoint Presentation: What, then, is a Sulphite ? Ah!, that is harder to define. A Sulphite is a person who does his own thinking, he is a person who has surprises up his sleeve. He is explosive. One can never foresee what he will do, except that it will be a direct and spontaneous manifestation of his own personality. You cannot tell them by the looks. Sulphites come together like drops of mercury, in this bromidic world. Unknown, unsuspected groups of them are scattered over the earth, and we never know where we are going to meet them- like fireflies in Summer, like Americans in Europe. The Bromide we have always with us, predicting the obvious. The Sulphite appears uncalled. The paragraph is about --------------------------------. The dominant characteristics of sulphites are, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------. Are they rare or common????? Reading Sub-skills: Reading Sub-skills 2) Scanning : Quick reading to look for specific information. Ignore the irrelevant and go directly to our desired information like a telephone number in a directory. Usually concerns with questions like “when, where, what, who, how”. Reading Sub-skills: Reading Sub-skills 4) Evaluation : Drawing conclusions, Suggesting alternatives, Giving your own pinion, Justifying and supporting the writer’s opinion with evidence from the text.
