QUESTION THREE • What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Current, successful publishing companies:
Which media company would publish my magazine? After previously researching several popular publishing companies, I think that IPC Media would be the most appropriate incorporation to distribute my magazine. IPC Media Ltd is a subsidiary of Time Inc, it is a consumer magazine and digital publisher in the United Kingdom, with a large portfolio selling over 350 million copies each year. It is recognised for newspapers such as The Sun and Daily Mirror, it also distributes the high quality, rock/alternative/indie music magazine, NME. I spent a considerable amount of time analysing features of NME, I found it inspiring in terms of the content it used and it heavily influenced the construction of my final product, along with Q magazine. Considering that my magazine is very simular, I feel as though IPC already illustrates what I had in mind for Vibes. It is a publishing incorporation that covers a huge variety of genres, as well as different media platforms, so eventually they could help my magazine to branch out in some way.
Advertising in Vibes Magazines make money by selling (cover sales) although mostly through advertising for various companies inside the magazine. It is conventional for the adverts to be related to the target audiences typical interests in some way. Vibes music magazine is of the alternative genre and aimed at people with an age demographic of around 16 – 30, I think the below brands would be suitable examples of what would be advertised in Vibes.
Should my magazine have an online presence? Would an app be suitable? Taking Vibes’ target audience and popular genre in to consideration, I think an online presence would add to it’s potential success. This would include the magazine’s own website (referred to several times in my final product) which would contain regular news updates, gig information etc. Along with pages on Facebook, Twitter, a radio show and possibly even a Youtube channel. This establishes more of an intimate connection between the brand and audience, making them feel as though they are part of something. My magazine should be available to browse on iPad, iPhone and Kindle formats so my readers can take part in a way that is suited to them. This also assists its ability to reach a wider audience. I doubt an app would be necessary due to the fact that all the features it should offer would already be available on the website.
