Question 4 Who would be the audience for your media product?
Reason For My Audience There would be several different audiences for my media product. One of the main reasons for this is because of the fact that my media product does not contain any graphic scenes; it’s more psychological, therefore giving it a lower age rating; allowing more people watch it.
Those Interested In Film/Thrillers The biggest audience would be those who are interested in films; especially those with an interest in the thriller genre. As my product is of the thriller genre those who especially liked thriller films would be my main target audience as they would know people and have friends with similar interests to themselves who they could recommend the film to; therefore gaining myself a bigger audience.
Teenagers I would also target a teenage audience as I have used a teenage girl as my main character who a lot of people would be able to relate with as she is just as average person. I’d also be able to target them as my product doesn’t contain any graphic scenes or contain any gore that would potentially put them off the product; they’d also be targeted due to the low age rating.
Sub Genre The fact that my product is set more around the psychological thriller base of the genre it would appeal to those who prefer content that is more stimulating and helps to challenge them as apposed to films that are simply just there to be watched. It would help them to get a more enjoyable outcome as a result of it and would be seen more highly by them than other sub genres of thrillers.
Creative/Technical Aspects I may also target those who prefer the more technical and creative side of the film, such as the; way the different sections of footage has been edited together, the sound and audio created and where it’s placed. It would be a good thing for them to see so that they could compare it to other films of a similar nature and would allow them to get their own ideas from it to either use or to just enjoy and take notes from.
User Ratings – ‘You’re Next’ ‘Y ou’re Next’ is a thriller that had a lot of influence on the idea for the media product. The media product was based around a family being trapped within their own house with the ‘bad guy’ of the film doing anything they could in order to cause them harm; which is quite like the film ‘Y ou’re Next’ . From the User R atings found on IMDB we were able to get a good idea of what our target audience would be as it would be along the same sort of plot line and be along the same sort of theme as ‘Y ou’re Next’ which was ultimately more suited to people ‘Aged under 18 ’ ; specifically suited more to males. ‘Y ou’re Next’ user ratings
User Ratings – ‘Secret Window’ ‘Secret Window’ is another thriller that had a lot of influence on the locations for the media product. The media product was based around a house that was very close to a nearby lake; which is where the main character would come into contact with the ‘bad guy’. ‘Secret Window’ is based around a house that is next to a lake. From the User R atings found on IMDB we were able to get a rough idea of what our target audience would be if we had it set location-wise like ‘Secret Window’ which was ultimately more suited to people ‘Aged under 18 ’ ; especially with females. ‘Secret Window’ user ratings
User Ratings – ‘Insidious’ ‘Insidious’ is a thriller that also had a lot of influence when it came to the media product. When thinking of music for the media product, ‘Insidious’ was suggested as it had a creepy sort of nursery rhyme song in it. We went for this sort of idea as well as it fit in well with out product and made it more creepy as the nursery rhyme was distorted to fit into the thriller genre even more. From the User R atings found on IMDB we were able to get a good idea of what our target audience would be if we has the same sort of music as ‘Insidious’ which was ultimately more suited to people ‘Aged under 18 ’ ; being favourable by both genders. ‘Insidious’ user ratings
Conclusion In conclusion I feel that my media product is going to be targeted mainly at a teenage audience. From looking at the IMDB User R atings I’ve seen that all of the films that my media product was inspired by were most popular with people aged under 18 and so this has helped me to decide that this will be the main target audience for my thriller as it’s of a similar plotline to these other thriller films that have been successful with those under the age of 18 . In terms of the music used it is similar to that of ‘Insidious’ which was very popular with people of both genders under 18 . In terms of plotline it is similar to that of ‘Y ou’re Next’ which was very popular with under 18 males. In terms of location it is very similar to that of ‘Secret Window’ which was popular with females under 18 . With the different aspects of my thriller being popular of both genders under 18 and more specific to the different genders it makes sense that both genders under 18 should be my target audience.
