QUB Meeting – Friday 24th April 2009 Meeting to discuss Creed’s proposals for Queen’s Chaplaincy. Present: The Reverend Donald Ker, the Reverend Des Bain, Bishop Alan Abernethy and Bishop Harold Miller on Friday 24th April at 3.30pm in Church of Ireland House, Belfast. PHILOSOPHICAL Within the covenant relationship between the Methodist Church in Ireland and the Church of Ireland there is a strong commitment to do anything we can together. We are committed to owning this project together. We also agreed a joint vision on what chaplaincy is particularly around mission and vision in living out faith in the community. STRUCTURE How do the two institutions merge their mission and ministry and yet maintain their identity.? There is a suggestion to create a high level board/management group. This would need to be a legal entity to hold property in trust with a built in agreement that property could revert to original trustees. LEGAL ADVICE NEEDED. This board would select, appoint and manage the chaplaincy staff. There would be a lead chaplain and a balance of denominations on the staff team. The financial structures for shared funding would need to be agreed. There will also be questions around the relationships to church bodies and different structures of authority. BUILDING ISSUES All covered by option 6 as presented but there are serious questions as to how we can finance any building at present. We also have concern around a student accommodation audit regarding long term letting possibilities and the number of student rooms required. There is also the need for some small group rooms. If we cannot do any building do we still plan for joint management and chaplaincy? NEXT STAGE? 1. Methodists to talk to Methodist Chaplaincy Committee in Queens and to the Reverend John Alderdice. 2. The Bishops to talk to Management Committee in QUB. 3. No financial plan makes project difficult. 4. We have agreed to meet again after these informal conversations to decide how to take this forward and we are very committed to do so.
