STAIR NOSING SOLUTIONS FOR ALL TYPES OF BUILDING Stair Nosings are designed to meet the needs of different types of buildings. Whilst Stair Nosings in general are all similar in shape and performance to achieve the basic requirements of: » Defining the Step Nose for safety » Protecting stairway flooring materials » Providing a feature to enhance interior designs There are some special profiles with features that have been incorporated to achieve certain specific requirements of sector locations. Examples are: » Residential » Offices » Healthcare » Education » Retail » Hotel & Leisure » Public Sector These are but a few of the sectors where Quantum Flooring Stair Nosings have specialised features that provide benefits to the specifier. The following pages show the full range on offer, but if a specific Stair Nosing design is needed then advice on the profile to do the job is available from: 0161 627 4222 or sales@quantum-ps.co.uk 03 FLOORING ACCESSORIES SPECIFICATION GUIDE

STAIR NOSINGS 04

WHAT IS A STAIR NOSING? A Stair Nosing is an angled profile usually consisting of an aluminium or PVCu carrier with a slip resistant tread material on the upper surface (tread). Stair Nosings are installed on stairways to: TRADITIONAL ad Tre 1. Define and highlight the edge of the step - for safety. 3. Offer, through the correct colour choice, an attractive aesthetic finish to a stairway. If the correct Stair Nosing is specified for a project, then the stairways involved will always be: Safe, Durable and Attractive. 05 Riser Tread material in channel Carrier Q RANGE ad Tre Riser 2. Protect the nose of the step and to prevent wear to the floor covering thus prolonging life. Bac k Edg e All over tread material Nose

KEY CONSIDERATIONS In order to specify the correct Stair Nosing profile on a staircase the following questions should be considered. 1 What floor covering is being installed? This will determine the gauge of the Stair Nosing to be used. A vinyl or lino floor covering requires a slimmer gauge Stair Nosing than that for a carpet or carpet tile. The Quantum Flooring Stair Nosings displayed on the following pages are designated Slenderline (S) or Heavy Duty (H) respectively. Straight 2 What shape is the step profile? To narrow down the choice further the shape or profile of the nose of the steps should be identified. The main choices are Flat (Straight), Rake and Bullnose. Each of the following product pages (p9-24) is divided into these different profile shapes. Rake 3 What tread style is required? Bullnose There are 3 tread options to choose from. Q RANGE TREAD (p9-12) – A Stair Nosing with a patent protected ‘all over’ tread design that extends from the front to the back edge of the Stair Nosing, thereby enhancing the slip resistance of the surface and meeting the recommendations of BRE IP15/03. SINGLE CHANNEL TREAD – This is the industry standard all-purpose Stair Nosing design used in light to medium foot traffic conditions. All over tread DOUBLE CHANNEL TREAD – This design is traditionally for heavy foot traffic applications. 4 What tread material is required? Light-Med Traffic Quantum Flooring offers three different treads for different environments: Standard Internal - A special formulated PVC which is a proven grade with good slip resistance and long wear characteristics in dry conditions. External - For wet or greasy applications, this high grip material provides a safe footing in tough conditions. Heavy Traffic Ecoglo - Also a heavy duty material suitable for internal or external use, with the additional feature of photoluminescence. Once charged after exposure to natural or artificial light the material ‘glows’ to provide safe passage in darkened stairways. See p25 for full details. 5 Does the stairway need to meet best practice guidelines? g Regs Buildin * If so details of best practice guidelines can be seen on the following pages. If this type of Stair Nosing is required then look out for the Building Regulations Best Practice logo throughout. KEY DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS BUILDING REGULATIONS & GUIDELINES MADE EASY …. “Stairs, ladders and ramps shall be designed constructed and installed as to be safe for people moving between different levels in or about the building.” (BUILDING REGULATION DOCUMENT K, 2013, SCHEDULE 1) There are four documents that give guidance to help satisfy this requirement: i) ii) iii) iv) Building Regulation Document K – Protection from falling Building Regulation Document M – Access to and use of buildings BS8300:2009+A1:2010 – Lighting of stepped access & slip resistance Building Research Information Paper – IP15/03: Proprietary nosings for non-domestic stairs These four documents cover guidance for five different considerations for Stair Nosing and stairway design: CREATING A SAFE STAIRWAY AND A CONSTANT BAND OF COLOUR DOCUMENTS K, M AND BS8300: 1) The recommended dimensions of a Stair Nosing: The tread should measure between 50-65mm and the riser 30-55mm. This ensures there is a large enough band on the step edge. Quantum Flooring have a wide selection of Stair Nosings which have these dimensions. 50-65mm 30-55mm 2) The colour requirements of the Stair Nosing tread and riser: The colour of the Stair Nosing is required to differ from that of the floor covering. Every colour has a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of between 0 (Black) and 100 (White). There must be at least 30 points difference between the Stair Nosing LRV and the floor covering, e.g. If the floor covering has a LRV of 50, then the Stair Nosing should have a LRV of between 0-20 or 80-100. The Quantum Flooring range of colours all have a LRV value which can be seen on pages 65. Colour (and the Light Reflectance Value – LRV) is important in particular when specifying to follow the Building Regulation Guidelines. Even if the stairway is not in an area of Public Access the correct colour selection is important to make the stairway attractive. Quantum Flooring offers 19 different tread colour options for Stair Nosings and 14 for PVCu channels. 07 FLOORING ACCESSORIES SPECIFICATION GUIDE

DOCUMENT M AND THE BS8300:2009 MAKE REFERENCE TO: 3) The assistance provided by a tactile surface at the approaches to a stairway: A tactile approach should be installed as a hazard warning surface on the top and bottom approaches of the staircase, which will warn pedestrians that they are approaching a staircase. A fully detailed drawing of how the tiles should be installed can be found on page 60. 4) The slip resistance of the tread surface of a Stair Nosing: The tread material used is important for the safety and performance of a stairway. There are two recommended tests that can be carried out to determine the slip resistance of a flooring material. The pendulum test (PTV) and a surface micro roughness measurement (Rz). Either of these can be used to give an indication of the slip resistance of a material. Quantum Flooring’s PVC tread material has been laboratory tested and has a PTV reading greater than 36 and a micro roughness reading, taken off used tread, of >20 Rz. Both these results classify the PVC tread material as being of a 'low slip potential' or risk. FINALLY THE BRE INFORMATION PAPER IP/15/03 INTRODUCES: 5) Guidance about the coverage of the tread material on the top surface of the Stair Nosing: The tread is the surface of the Stair Nosing which receives ascending or descending footfall. The Stair Nosing tread material should extend to the front edge to the point at which it meets the vertical face to minimise the risk of a slip in descent. Every profile within the Quantum Flooring Q-Range meets this guidance. Other considerations There are a number of other considerations that should be made when looking to create best practice staircases, these include looking to avoid: » Bullnosed steps - these can create a trip hazard to partially sighted users, who use their foot to find the nose edge of the step. » Open riser steps - again these create a trip hazard. » Shiny metal - as these can create glare in artificial or direct sunlight. Throughout this guide the products that can be used to ensure Regs* best BR/BS/BRE g il practice stamp. practice can be identified by the ‘Building Regulations’ bestdin Bu For more information see page 60 g Buildin Regs * Or watch our online video covering the specification of stair nosings in areas of public access www.quantumflooring.co.uk/videos Visit www.quantumflooring.co.uk or call 0161 627 4222 08

FABRICATION - QSMS MEASURING SERVICE FABRICATION & FINISHING FABRICATION Inevitably not every step that needs a Stair Nosing will be straight or enclosed. For this reason Quantum Flooring is able to provide hand crafted curved, mitred and welded Stair Nosings. Each of these special shaped Stair Nosings is bespoke and fabricated in the Quantum Flooring factory to individual templates that have been measured and taken on-site. A free templating service is available as part of the QSMS service (see page 28). FINISHING QUICKSILVER - prestige chrome effect finish aluminium Available with all aluminium Stair Nosings apart from Q Range. This process produces a premium appearance. ANODISING Again anodising is available on all aluminium products – we are able to anodise in a number of different colours, the most popular being a brass effect finish for a more cost effective brass alternative. Some profiles are available as standard in anodised gold and these are identified by the symbol on the respective Stair Nosing pages. Please ask for details or other profiles and anodising colours. For these minimum quantities are usually applicable. STAIR NOSING TREAD MATERIAL Stair Nosing channels are available pre-taped and drilled or undrilled, with tread material separate in 20m coils. ADHESIVE TAPES Quantum Flooring offers a general purpose contact adhesive tape in 4 different widths. Use of these tapes is the responsibility of the contractor, since site conditions can vary. If in doubt a proprietry contact adhesive is recommended. 27 FLOORING ACCESSORIES SPECIFICATION GUIDE General Purpose Contact Tapes - 50m rolls CODE WIDTH QT50/15 15mm QT50/25 25mm QT50/55 55mm QT50/85 85mm PVC Infill for Stair Nosings (2.5mm thick) Internal use 20m coils - all colours (see pages 65-66) CHANNEL CODE WIDTH Double (x2) IN38 38mm Single (Z) IN43 43mm Single (Standard) IN50 50mm Adhesive Tape for Infill (application to channel) Internal use - 100m rolls CODE WIDTH QT100/35 35mm QT100/40 40mm QT100/48 48mm

KEY CONSIDERATIONS This section of the guide offers 4 categories of PVC accessory that provide solutions to the sealing of the join between the wall base and a hard floor covering. 1 Sit-on Skirtings Sit-On Skirting - easily installed after the flooring material is laid pages 33-34 2 Set-in Skirtings Set-In Skirting - welded to the flooring making a safe clean join pages 35-36 Flat Skirting 3 Flat/Buffer Skirtings - versatile protection to the base of walls pages 37-38 4 Cove Formers and Capping Strips - best for wet and sanitised areas Cove Formers Capping Strips pages 39-40 All are used in differing circumstances with either vinyl or lino flooring material to provide a neat and clean finish to the junction between floor and wall. They serve to cover up any ‘gap’ between wall plaster and the floor level and in the case of the cove formers give good support to the floor material which prevents possible damage from floor cleaning equipment. Sit-on, set-in and cove former variants all provide a radiused corner to the wall/floor join which inhibits the accumulation of dirt and microbial growth, making them practical products for use in hospitals, schools, kitchens and bathrooms.
