David Rottmayer Quality in FTTX Deployments presentation at the BICSI 2014 Winter Conference

Quality in FTTX Deployments David L Rottmayer President & CEO Unicorn Communications Inc. Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 1

Quality Techniques Today's demand for FTTX networks has driven various techniques that allow for quick solutions to the networks, but not always quality solutions meeting the networks. This presentation explores the differences of these techniques and their effect on quality and the ability of the OSP network to meet the future demands of the network. Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 2

OSP Construction Quality Items • Vibration • Temperature Variations – Thermal Line (aka Freeze Line) • Slack Loops – 5 Loops @ 20x OSD = 0.05dB Loss – Bends after Splice points • Splices Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 3

FTTX Deployment Techniques Micro-Trenching Mini-Trenching Micro-Duct Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 4

Micro-Trenching • Who is doing it in the USA – Google – Verizon – AT&T • Application – Metro areas – Temporary placement to meet demand – FTTX applications – Drop Cables Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 5

Micro-Trenching ITU-T L.49 MicroTrench Installation Technique Applies to routes that involve asphalted surfaces such as roads or sidewalks with a base compact materials (asphalt or concrete) Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 6

Micro-Trenching Depth of groove in the asphalt (concrete) not less than 7cm (2.7in) but not penetrating past the asphalt (concrete) layer (Normally less than 20cm (7.5in)) 19cm depth groove Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 7

Micro-Trenching Width of groove varies based on cable / duct dimensions but normally 10 – 15mm (.4 - .6in) Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 8

Micro-Trenching • Fiber Cable should be a metallic (i.e. copper) tube filled with a suitable compound and surrounded by a PE jacket – Optional to place micro-duct and then use standard micro-duct fiber cables • The groove is filled in with hot bitumen varying from 100° - 170° C (212°- 338° F) Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 9

Micro-Trenching - Weaknesses • • • • Vibration effects Thermal effects Limited protection during road renovation Difficulty during emergency repairs Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 10

Mini- Trenching • Who is doing it in the USA – Most metro applications • Applications – Metro – FTTX – Long-haul • Why – Cost – Impact to area and speed Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 11

Mini- Trenching ITU-T L.48 MiniTrench Installation Technique Applied on routes what generally involve asphalt (concrete) surfaces with a subgrade of compact materials Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 12

Mini- Trenching • Normal depth: 30 – 40cm (12 - 16in) – Bottom of trench • Normal width: 7 – 15cm (3 – 6 in) • Cable or Duct Placement without spacers • Backfill is by pouring concrete with suitable foaming additives Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 13

Mini- Trenching - Weaknesses • • • • Thermal Effect Vibration Exposure to damage Long term satisfaction of transportation departments due to different wearing effects of the road Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 14

Micro Duct • Manufacturers – Duraline – Emtelle – CommScope – Knet – Etc Feb 2, 2014 Quality in FTTX Deployments 15
