Q2) How does your media product represent particular social groups? Christ the King: Aquinas. 13L4013. Tommy Hoang

My magazine is generally under the category of indie/soft rock. I have tried to make my front cover, contents page and double page spread appropriate for particular social groups that would be interested in these kinds of music. The audience would mainly be of the student demographic (ranges from 16-25). The magazine is appropriate for both genders but more appealing for the female gender as there is a female model on my front cover. My sub-culture is students who are young (ages between 16-18), so I had to optimise my magazine to represent their interests. I used well-known rock/indie artists on my front cover as cover-lines such as Cold play and 2 door cinema club in which young students who like popular artists/bands will be attracted to my magazine. This gives an stereotype of young students of how they keep up with the latest news about their favourite music celebrities. Additionally, I have also added aspects of where people could do something if they are interested in music. For example, concerts, gigs. Young readers and students would be interested and likely to read my magazine due to the fact that my contents page has included events that has occurred and upcoming events that may occur in the new year. The content within my magazine is used to draw the attention of young student’s interests in which I have used photographs to address my contents. The readers would be intrigued because they are attracted to the context within the contents.

Colour scheme My colour scheme consists of red, black, grey, white and blue which can appeal to both male and female customers. The colour blue is more appealing to men (stereotypically) as they can associate blue with power, strength and masculinity. The colour red is more appealing to females (stereotypically) as they can associate red with passion or romance. The colour grey and black is more appealing to men as it again, gives more of a masculine association as well as seriousness. The white connotes as innocent and pure which gives a balance between the “feminine” colour of red and the masculinity of the grey/black and blue. These colours are quite complementary, therefore it gives an emphasis of equality and diversity between people. Furthermore, I have used a leaf shape pattern for the background with stereotypically; young female students (16-18) would be more attracted to things that look pretty; thus appealing.

I have researched and analysed some magazines of how they targeted similar demographics to who I was targeting (Ages 16-25). I have based my structure on ‘Q’ magazine as well as ‘BLENDER’ magazine. ‘Q’ magazine has the colour theme of red, white and black for their magazines and they have artists/bands that are presented to their target audience of people who listen to them. ‘Q’ magazine has also included articles that people are quite well known in the 21st century such as Lily Allen and Oasis. Hundreds of thousands of people listen to these bands so an average reader would be quite interested since they are quite known. ‘BLENDER’ magazine has the colour scheme of gold, white, black and light blue. They have Fergie on the front cover who is very well known the in R’n’B industry. Since she is well known with millions of fans world-wide, people would who are likely to buy this would be people who are into the genre of RnB.

Bobble hat Front Cover My front cover model is a girl in which would appeal to females slightly more than men as she is dressed in a particular way. She is dressed wearing a bobble hat and a plain, yet simple t-shirt and a black dress. The grey shirt gives a simplistic look yet sophisticated. She is also wearing a black plain dress which gives it more of a feminine touch. The bobble hat is red white and blue which is placed in a pattern as the American flag. This shows diversity in which this magazine is meant to be distributed within the UK. The red lipstick that my model is wearing connotes a ‘girly’ touch to the magazine and gives an impression that my model is interested in make-up. Females would be interested in this due to the fact that they will be interested in fashion of my model as well as the make-up that she is wearing. Stars (rock star look) Red lipstick Furthermore, my model has added stars to her face where some rock-stars and indie artists do this to show love for their music; this would appeal to those who are into rock/indie as she has added features in which rockstars/indie artists would do. To add to this, this would appeal to boys as it shows a young female as she is dressed in a way to impress not only females but males. Since she is dressed in a way that is quite informal and more of a student; students themselves can relate to how she is dressed. Guitar My model is from an Asian background on my front cover, and different other cultures within my magazine in which emphasises on being in a multi-cultural era since there isn’t going to be only one culture in my magazine. My model is quite young in which is around the same age as my target audience; students in college/university. She is represented in a way that shows herself being passionate and serious about music from what she is doing with the guitar, make-up and clothing. Her body language connotes a sexy image and her high spirit for music as she holds the guitar right up. My readers will be intrigued by her sassy look and the appearance of my model. Black dress Grey shirt

Contents page My contents page consists of two images, one image of a woman who is wearing a red jacket, a school ID pass, a plain white t-shirt and posing using a ukulele. This would appeal to females as she is dressed in a manner that my target audience can relate to in which they are students themselves. They ‘redness’ of the jacket connotes a feisty and sassy look which would be appealing to females as they would like to compare what other students who are interested in music would wear. Additionally, the school-ID would indicate that my model on the contents page is a student herself. This would be appealing to students as the y put themselves in my models shoes; thus can gain knowledge of how she dresses herself. The red adds emphasis of a feminine touch. By using a ukulele, it adds further diversity to my magazine as my front cover is of a Asian model with a guitar where this is a ukulele. This suggests that my magazine is not focused on one genre; but two genres mixed together. Males would be appealed to this image as they would be intrigued of how amateur levelled female musicians present themselves. The body positioning of this image is that she is presented in a sexy manner as this would mainly attract men (stereotypically). My second image of the contents page is an image that I have taken at a school. Within this image, there is cultural diversity since they come from different backgrounds which avoids ethnocentricity; thus is appealing to all cultural/ethnic backgrounds. Additionally, there are further musical equipment which would add emphasis to how my magazine is music related. This is appealing to those who are interested in music as they would recognise the different equipment presented within this image (e.g. microphone, acoustic and electric guitars). Furthermore, this shot is a long shot of the band which shows their atmosphere of where they are in which is a stage. This would be appealing to those who are interested in concerts/gigs as they can relate to how professional bands present themselves live on stage. However, this image can be made better due to the fact that they are wearing their school uniform within this image which gives it an unimpressive look as real bands do not wear school uniforms. The body language presented in this image is quite adequate due to the fact that they are all performing at this point of time. This gives it positive affect as they are young and passionate about music; there fore this is appealing for my target audience as they can relate to their age and may like to take up a music instrument or something to do with music as this may inspire them.

Double page spread My double page spread is of a male model which would appeal quite equally to both male and female as he is dressed in a particular way. This person is wearing a snapback hat, headphones, a black leather jacket and an bright blue acoustic guitar. The snapback hat gives him a ‘bad boy’ look as he is wearing the hat in a way that is high position. The hat gives him identity and shows confidence. This is appealing to those who are interested in fashion as they can relate to what a young male musician would wear in the 21st century. Furthermore, the model within the double page is also wearing headphones around his neck. This is quite representative of those who are interested in buying music accessories as they may be intrigued to what brand it is. Furthermore, the use of headphones within this magazine shows that my model is a person who listens to a lot of music as he is wearing professional headphones at one of the best in the music industry. To add to this, the model is also wearing a black leather jacket. The colour black connotes a strong and sophisticated appearance as it shows how he is confident in his music. This is appealing to those who are interested of how young men are dressed. Moreover, the usage of an acoustic guitar also adds emphasis that this model is an musician; this would be appealing because the image relates to the text presented thus the target audience can relate to who this person is. My model on the double page spread is from a different nationality from all the other models on the front cover and double page spread. This promotes cultural diversity which would be appealing to everyone no matter where they come from.
