Puma : Puma By:Kyle&Carson The King of The vallys PUMA AKA - Mountain Lion, Cougar or Panther   By: Kyle & Carson I am purrrfect!!! Why We Chose This Animal : Why We Chose This Animal We chose this animal because we didn't know much about the puma. We wanted to learn more about this animal, so we could teach other people about their life and other important facts. DESCRIPTION : DESCRIPTION Description : Description The puma is the second largest cat — only the jaguar is larger  The puma’s thick coat of fur is plain in color, with shades ranging from bluish gray in the northern regions to reddish brown in the tropics. Pumas living in drier areas tend to be lighter in color.  Newborn kittens have densely spotted fur and light blue eyes. When kittens are 8 months old, their spots have mostly faded and their eyes begin to change color. At 16 months, their eyes are the golden brown of adults. Slide 5: Adaptions Long tails are used to balance themselves on their jumps and steep edges. Pumas have large feet that are used for jumping great heights The Puma or mountain lion can climb up and down trees. Habitat : Habitat Slide 7: General Habitat Information Pumas are found in  northern woods of Canada, the rocky, western country of the United states, and the tropical rainforests of Brazil.  In Argentina, they live in the pampas  Pumas rest and find shelter in caves, among rocky outcrops, and in dense vegetation. Temperatures : Temperatures Temperatures vary depending on where they live. Usually they experience all four temperature ranges (spring, summer, winter, and fall) They grow fur when it gets cold to stay warm. They shed their fur when it gets warmer. Water : Water Puma's need fresh water in order to survive  Pumas are good swimmers, but they’d rather not get in the water because they don’t seem to like being wet.  Puma’s can be found near a fresh water source like rivers, lakes, ponds, and streams. Plant Life : Plant Life There are a lot of diverse plants in the Mountain Lion habitat. The plants are important because they hunt the animals that eat the plants. They also use the trees to climb and search for and sneak up on their prey. Animal Life : Animal Life Other animals that can be found in a Pumas habitat are deer, rabbits, elk, and other prey. There are other large animals in their habitat like wolves and coyotes that become competition for food. The only animals that Pumas need to be afraid of in their habitat are human hunters. Sensory Organs : Sensory Organs Sight : Sight Most pumas see up to six times better than humans. Pumas have very good eyesight. They can see a predator coming on top of a very large mountain and they can detect which predator it is! Smell : Smell Pumas smell is limited They can only smell somthing up to 5 yards away They have to rely on their other senses like hearing and eyesight to hunt their prey. Hearing : Hearing Pumas have very keen sense of hearing  Pumas hearing is very sencitive Pumas can hear things up to a whole football feild away that is 100 yards away Taste : Taste Pumas eat with their mouth. They usually prefer big game like deer and elk. If there are not big game around they usually eat raccoons, rabbits, and squirrels. Touch : Touch Pumas use their touch to survive in the wild by climbing mountains and trees for safety.   They use their claws to kill their prey.   The last thing they use their sense of touch when they defend their young from predetors. Slide 18: Food and Life Cycles Life Cycle : Life Cycle Female Pumas generally reproduce when they are about 2-1/2 years old.  The female gives birth to an average of 2 to 3 young called kittens.  When the young are about 6 weeks old, she begins taking them to her kills to feed. At 6 months, they weigh over 30 pounds and are becoming capable hunters They can live 10 years in the wild and 20 years in captivity Food  Chain : Food  Chain The sun gives energy to the plants.      Dear and elk eat the plants.  Pumas eat the dear and elk. Hunters kill the pumas. Uh oh a hunter!!! Interesting Facts : Interesting Facts Interesting Fact #1 : Interesting Fact #1 If you see a puma, do not run, because their instinct might make them chase you. Instead, stand and face the animal, and look into its eyes. Stand tall, raise your arms, and make yourself look large. If it comes toward you, scare it away by shouting, waving your arms, or throwing things. Interesting Fact #2 : Interesting Fact #2 Female pumas call to potential mates with a piercing cry that sounds much like a woman's scream. Every year some panicked people call the police to report an "attack" in progress. Interesting Fact #3 : Interesting Fact #3 The puma is an expert jumper.   They can jump up to 20 feet in a single bound. I believe I  can fly!!! Intresting Fact #4 : Intresting Fact #4 Pumas leave "messages" for each other with feces, urine, scratched logs, and marks they scrape out in the dirt or snow.
