PT vs.PTA? • The Physical Therapist Assistant ➡ para-professional ➡ under the supervision and direction of a PT • PTA requires Associate Degree. • PT primarily require a Doctorate Degree. ➡ A few MS are available
PTA does not Transfer to PT • Credit from PTA classes does not transferred to PT programs. • PTA is uniquely prepared for a career as a Physical Therapist Assistant.

Full-time program (2 years) • 67 credits • 29 credits arts and science courses • 38 credits PTA courses ➡ 12 credits ➡ Completed in PT settings which affiliate with the PTA Program • 3-5 days per week • Internships are 40 hours weekly
Program Accreditation • Licensed by the Connecticut Board of Governors for Higher Education. • Naugatuck Valley Community College(and affiliated colleges) are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). Admission Procedures • Apply to HCC as General Studies Major • Remedial courses and placement test completed • High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) • College (other than HCC), transcript will be evaluated for transfer courses

Admission Procedures • G.P.A. minimum 2.5 ➡ This may not be the same as college GPA ➡ Based ONLY on the PTA General Education courses ➡ Recent years admitted students average GPA has been higher than 3.3
Admission Procedures Application given to Dr. Cercone + Transcripts MUST be sent to Dr. Cercone as well as to admissions by Oct. 15
Admission Procedures • Complete the course Anatomy and Physiology I with a minimum grade of “C+" ➡ may be offered conditional acceptance ➡ A&P II must have been completed within 5 years with a minimum of a ”C+”
Admission Procedures • Observation • 20 hours ➡ 10 hours in-patient ➡ 10 hours out-patient
Other accomplishments Applicants with certain accomplishments are stronger candidates: •Earned Bachelor’s degree by 10/15 •Completed ALL general education courses •Grades of A or B in Math and Science
Recommendations • Visit or do one of the following before submission of application ➡ Attend a PTA Information Session ➡ Observe a PTA lab class ➡ Meet with Dr. Cercone

Admission Decisions • Competitive selective admissions • 30 applicants (across all colleges) admitted each year • First round of decisions by Thanksgiving ➡ 2nd round made in January • Any applicant not accepted will need to reapply next year

PTA Curriculum • Fourth Semester Clinical Experiences • Clinic-related courses Full time, 2 different clinics 8:30 am – 4:30 pm • Homework at clinical • No other job is possible so planning is critical • Students who work more than 20 hours a week often struggle or withdraw from the program
Program Requirements once Admitted • Attend mandatory Admissions Meeting for admitted students ➡ In December • Submit completed health requirements by first day of classes (physical exam, immunizations, etc.) • Obtain Certification in CPR Healthcare Provider through the American Heart Association of American Red Cross (must be BCLS-Healthcare Provider)
Program Requirements once admitted • Criminal Background Check for Felony convictions • Drug screening ➡May be required by clinical facility ➡At student’s expense
Potential Requirements Flu vaccines may be required depending on the facility. It is not yet mandatory, but may become mandatory for all.
