What is Cleanliness Cleanliness is both the abstract state of being clean and free from dirt, and the process of achieving and maintaining that state. Cleanliness may be endowed with a moral quality, as indicated by the aphorism "cleanliness is next to godliness," and may be regarded as contributing to other ideals such as health and beauty.

STEPS IN TEACHING PERSONAL CLEANLINESS TO A KINDERGARTEN CHILD  Personal Cleanliness  Environmental Cleanliness

1 Washing Hands

 Leaving the toilet or  Touching Food  Cooking  Eating  Tending a cut or sore  Visiting and taking care of any sick person bathroom  Touching garbage and anything dirty (including children's play-sand).  Touching a dirty nose  Touching an open cut or sore  Touching an animal, bird or insect  Touching raw meat or fish

2 Cleaning the body

 Bath everyday with soap so that there is no dirt left on the skin.  Use talcum powder or deodorant after bath.  Wear clean clothes and undergarments.  Eat nutritious food.

 Cut your nails regularly before they grow up.  Anytime dirt gathers under the fingernails, they should be brushed with soap and water.

 Wash the hair regularly with a mild shampoo and lukewarm water.  Comb and brush them properly.  Always keep the comb and brush separate.  Massage the hair regularly with oil.  Cover the hair when going outdoors to protect from pollution.  Eat nutritious food.

3 A clean mouth

 Food and candies that have fallen on the floor are dirty and should not be put in the mouth unless they can be washed properly.  Anything that has touched one person's mouth should not be put in someone else's mouth. Food, candies, drinking bottles etc. should not be passed from mouth to mouth.  Children have a tendency to touch their shoes, socks, feet, head, dirty nose and worse. They must learn not to put their hands in their mouth or touch food without first washing their hands.

4 Cleaning of teeth

 Brush the teeth twice daily  Use a soft toothbrush  Use a good quality toothpaste  Avoid sweets, biscuits and aerated drinks and if eaten brush the teeth properly afterwards

5 Care of teeth

 Cleaning them properly twice daily  Regular dentist visit  Taking appropriate amount of water, fluoride and calcium  Avoid chocolates, pastries, sweets and chewing gums

 It helps to prevent diseases and infections in the child  It improves the immune system of the child  It helps them do well in their studies as they will be free from diseases  It develops an attractive personality in the child  It helps him develop good manners which stays within him throughout his life
