A person is called heretic in this regard. Excommunication – a process hereby a person is declared by the Church to be out of her fold. Definition of Terms: Definition of Terms Schism- is a revolt against the authority of the Church, a formal separation from the unity of the Church. In itself it is not a sin against faith, but a grave sin of disobedience. In most cases however, it is joined with heresy, because the schismatic as a rule, also denies the supreme ruling and teaching power of the Pope, which is an article of faith. A person who holds such view is called schismatic.
