A PROPOSAL FOR CABLE CARS AS THE NEW PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM IN BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN AND DISTRICT By Bazly and Radhy 22.2.2014 ®
OBJECTIVE • To ease traffic congestion problems by reducing the number of cars used per household through the link up of cable cars within the capital city and the Brunei-Muara District
BRIEF INTRO • Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital city of Brunei Darussalam, a small state located in the north-western part of Borneo Island, South China Sea of the ASEAN region • A relatively small population of 400,000 in the region where the majority of the people live and work near the capital city i.e. in BruneiMuara District, where 290,000 lived within the district based on the available statistics

JUSTIFICATIONS • Environmentally friendly: “Cable cars are increasingly used for mass transit in world cities and across rivers because they need little space, have virtually no waiting time, can run at over 20mph, and have very low emissions. They are already used in New York, Istanbul, Vancouver, Madrid, Caracas and Hamburg, and other cities are planning systems” (http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2008/may/22/travelandtransport.carbonemissions)

THE PROPOSAL • To link up the cable cars on a grand scale within the current infrastructure of government complexes, private housing, shops, schools, mosques especially the 12 main tourist attractions as shown in the map • The link up entails huge high story towers with efficient lifts within few miles of each other • The cable cars will be powered by solar and wind energy as well as existing energy sources
LIMITATIONS OF PROPOSAL • A simplistic vision for developing Brunei’s capital as a futuristic metropolis • No technical study of either Brunei’s current infrastructure or the latest cable car technology
