Project 4 Compare and Contrast: Project 4 Compare and Contrast Jamiee Auger Nathan Doyle Amanda Harper Aimee Molleken Notah Silversmith introduction: introduction The project management plan is expected to effectively and efficiently guide all aspects of a project from start to finish. These philosophies help identify ways for the organization/company to run efficiently, effectively, and on budget. Slide3: Deming’s (PDCA) vs Baldridge What are the most important considerations in Project Management? o Stakeholder Agreement o Don’t jump to the planning stage too soon o Involved all those who know the work o Ignoring time o Pre-planning benefits o Programs and projects  What are some common areas in the project management philosophies? o Both philosophies are aimed at providing better production, quality management, and improving overall processes. o Both look at processes and how to improve them and how they are performing. o They look at the root causes to help identify how to improve them and fix the issues.  How do the goals and methods differ among these philosophies? o Deming Cycle focuses on continuous improvement by evaluating processes as opposed Baldridge focuses on process improvement through Leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, measurement/analysis/knowledge management, workforce focus, process management, results.  Under what conditions (including project type, team, and scope) are these philosophies most and least effective? o Both of these conditions would be best implemented in a controlled environment where things are monitored and processes can be evaluated.  Which, if any, philosophies could be combined for better results? o These two philosophies can be combined and it would only improve the outcome and results of your company. Both get to the root of the issues and work on fixing them at the source. Slide5: Six Sigma vs Lean Manufacturing Eliminates defects/waste by streamlining and improving/enhance processes Project-based approach ( Nayab , 2011) Uses DMAIC Is a program Goal is to remove wasteful/unproductive activities and only focus on value-adding activities A continuous, ongoing approach Uses value stream mapping Is a philosophy Similarities Eliminates Waste Streamlining Business Process Differences Lean classifies waste as anything that doesn’t add value Six Sigma says waste results from the variation within the process. Where to use? Infrastructure Implementation, Process Design, Process Improvement Can they Be Combined? They can and do get combined. It’s called Lean Six Sigma. Slide6: Lean Manufacturing vs Kaizen Identifies the processes/activities first, then creates a plan to either improve the value-adding activities and/or remove the wasteful activities Uses value stream mapping Mindset that everything can be improved and performed better (Kaizen Institute, 2015) Identify the 3 MU’s – Muda (wastes), Mura (variation/ inconsistency) and Muri (strain/ burden on people & machines) to find improvements Uses ‘Go and see’ method (addressing a situation as you run across it) Idea that small changes over a period of team can lead to big results Similarities Both Japanese Philosophies Continuous, on-going approach Differences Lean Manufacturing is a method. Lean is methodology. Kaizen can be applied to anything. It’s a mental process. Where to use? Lean Manufacturing is for One Piece Flow, Setup Production, Visual Control Kaizen is for Quick Strike, Process Mapping, Cause and Effect. Can they Be Combined? They can and do get combined. Use Lean knowledge in Kaizen workshops. Slide7: Kaizen vs Gantt Charts Kaizen’s most important considerations in project management is that this method is meant for making continuous improvements. “Kaizen technique could be applied in every process in organizations, and involves all employees in the company, from the CEO to the last of its workers.” (Kiger). Kaizen uses the Ishikawa Diagram, which help you determine cause and effect to certain problems in a graphical way. A Gantt Chart is part of the Kaizen methodology. “Gantt charts visually depict what tasks need to be done at what point in the project in order for it to move forward” (Burger,2015). Gantt charts most important consideration in project management is that it is a visual schedule with a task list breaking down exactly what needs to be done. Similarities Both are type of charts that are meant to keep a project on task. Both are only as effective as the data entered and the updating they receive as information because available. Differences The goal of each chart is to worry about different kinds of tasks. Gantt want to keep a project on schedule. Kaizen wants to chart what the cause of a problem is. Where to use? Both charts are effective in helping a project move along for two very different reasons. Gantt Charts are part of Kaizen. Both can be used for Process Design, Manufacturing, Construction. Can they Be Combined? Kaizen and Gantt can absolutely be combined on a project for better results. You can use Gantt to set a project schedule then use Kaizen to fix a problem you’ve discovered. Slide8: Gantt Charts vs Pert Charts A Gantt Chart is part of the Kaizen methodology. “Gantt charts visually depict what tasks need to be done at what point in the project in order for it to move forward” (Burger,2015). Gantt charts most important consideration in project management is that it is a visual schedule with a task list breaking down exactly what needs to be done. PERT stands for Program Evaluation Review Technique. “A PERT chart is a project management tool used to schedule, organize, and coordinate tasks within a project” (Rouse). PERT chart most important consideration in project management is that it breaks a project down into tasks. PERT Illustrates a project as a network diagram . Similarities Both Gantt and PERT are project manager schedulers that make a task list into schedules. Differences Gantt Charts are meant to be used at the end of project to show work completed. PERT charts are meant to be done at beginning of project to show upcoming work and allot a certain amount of time for it. Where to use? Both charts work well with a project that you are trying to stay on schedule from start to finish. Both can be used for Manufacturing, Construction, Software development. Can they Be Combined? A PERT chart might be used before you make a Gantt chart if you were unsure how long a task would take. Slide9: Pert Charts vs ISO 9000/9001 This is where time and cost estimates are uncertain Built for large projects Precedence relationships PERT Limitations Clarity Specificity Benefits of PERT Useful at many stage of the project Provides project documentation Uses Probabilistic Time Estimates Efficient Stable activities Over emphasis on critical paths Mathematically simple Useful in monitoring costs Used in Quality management and assurance standards ISO 9000 – Guide ISO 9001 - Set of requirements for the quality system ISO 9000 Advantages Registration is routine Critical Marketing tool (saves business between $25,000 to $500,000) ISO 9000 Disadvantages  Extra time and money involved in the registration process Increased A lot of work to set up Benefits Enter Global Market Self assesses quality procedures Improves Communication between Management and employees Concept - To determine characteristics of the management practices that need to be standardized. Registration is the bottom line of doing business Distraction from other quality programs Improves Management and Product/service Quality Satisfies customers Increases credibility Similarities Techniques and standards are important to both Both strive to improve management standards and communication. Differences One provides a more global standard on how to save money and time while the others goal is to save costs and time on a more local scale Where to use? Used in Project Management - For Research and Development When a project needs to be broken down into multiple levels . Can they Be Combined? Yes a PERT charts shows a time line on a graphic and ISO 9000/9001 gives guidance and requirements for projects to be completed. Slide10: ISO 9000/9001 vs Theory of Constraints Provides a set of quality management principles to organizations the implement management systems to ensure consistency and precision. This helps contribute to effective communication between organizations and clients comprises of seven quality management principles.  Customer focus Improvement People engagement Relationship management Process approach Leadership and decision making based on evidence Theory of Constraints is method It’s used to identify the most important limiting factor that keeps you from achieving goals. Then you syst3matically improving the situation. It’s takes scientific approach to improving system. Slide11: Theory of Constraints vs Benchmarking Traditional project management fails to address the practical uncertainties such as requirement change, work not completed on time, delayed approvals, etc. that typically occur in any project. This is where Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM), which is based off of the theory of constraints,  is different. CCPM focuses on task due dates and interim milestones in a project. It emphasizes on the completion of the most important tasks in the project plan as quickly as possible and delivering of the completed project as quickly as possible. Project management benchmarking is the process of continuously comparing the project management practices of your organization with the project management practices of leaders anywhere in the world; its goal is to gain information to help you improve your own performance. Slide12: Benchmarking vs Total Quality Management Similarities Both philosophies have the company's best interest in mind for they are always seeking to improve in all ways Differences Benchmarking focuses on gathering results from other companies and interpreting them while total quality management focuses on implementing practices within the company that will produce quality results Where to use? It seems that total quality management would be effective in all scenarios while it is important to consider relevance and accuracy of information when utilizing that tool Can they Be Combined? Yes you can using benchmarking as study then implement similar procedures. Total Quality management  describes a management approach to long–term success through customer satisfaction. In a TQM effort, all members of an organization participate in improving processes, products, services, and the culture in which they work. Total quality management refers to the practice used by the company to instill quality within their organization by using tools such as benchmarking to identify areas of needed improvement Slide13: Total Quality Management vs Deming’s PDCA Similarities Both work to adapt the companies project management process to a suitable and efficient method that takes into consideration factors that need improvement Differences None. PDCA is the basis for Total quality Management Where to use? Deming's points apply to any type and size of business. Service companies need to control quality just as much as manufacturing companies. And the philosophy applies equally to large multinational corporations, different divisions or departments within a company, and one-man operations Can they Be Combined? Absolutely, by using Deming's plan you are implementing methods of total quality management Deming began the movement towards  Total Quality control management by creating his 14 point philosophy: Create a constant purpose toward improvement 2. Adopt new philosophy 3. Stop depending on inspections 4. Use a single supplier for any one item 5. Improve constantly and forever 6.Use training on the job 7. Implement leadership 8. Eliminate fear  9. Break down barriers between departments 10. Get rid of unclear slogans 11. Eliminate management by objectives 12. Remove barriers of pride of workmanship 13 implement education and self improvement 14.
